IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some societies, stress is now regarded as a major problem, and it is thought that people suffer from more stress than they did in the past. However, others feel that the amount of stress people have today is exaggerated. They say that previous generations were under more pressure, but the idea of suffering from stress did not exist.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Suffering from stress is a controversial issue today. While some argue that stress nowadays has reduced and the ancient generation had to deal with pressure more than us. Others belive that we are still suffering from stress and dealing with pressure more than in the past which i totally agree with.

Those who support the idea of stress now in reduced and the ancients used to live under pressure just they were not aware of the concept of suffering from stress argue that in the past people's life were more complicated then our life because they had so many things to do ,as result they didnt have enough time to be aware of what they are suffering from. In addtion, technology facilated our lifes and our quality of life, however in the past they didnt have any type of technology to help and improve the quality of life. Moreover, they had more complicated jobs then we do, due to all of that ancient generations were dealing with more pressure, however the concept of suffering from stress did not exist.

On the other hand, nowadays all people without any exception young or old they are living under pressure and stress because we are living in the era of speed. In addition, social media and several types of technology made people more

Anxious than any other time because of the comparision on it and the hate spread. Furthermore, nowadays all people run after perfection which is very harmful trying to always be perfect mentally and physically so they can fit in our virtual world where everyone is faking perfection. Also, because of the isolation where we can see that individuals thesedays are alone and lonely more then our anceators which created more anxiety where people who spend much time alone suffer from anxiety which is mix of stress and pressure with low self confidance when they have to deal with other people.

To sum up, even if the ancient generations had to deal with stress, but i strongly belive that nowadays the level of stress and pressure dealt with everyday is more then our anceators.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both perspectives and state your own view clearly: the introduction says you “totally agree” that people today face more pressure, and the conclusion reinforces this position. The discussion of earlier generations includes relevant points about limited technology and demanding work, while the modern-life paragraph develops social media, perfectionism and isolation as sources of stress. However, the historical side is less fully explained: the claim that people in the past had “so many things to do” is broad, and the response does not give a specific example or clarify why those pressures were greater. Some modern points, especially loneliness and anxiety, are also asserted rather than supported with a concrete illustration. Develop the comparison more evenly and explain how each example supports your view.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a concluding opinion. Connectors such as “On the other hand,” “Furthermore” and “To sum up” help signal the main stages. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes difficult to follow because several ideas are packed into long sentences, and linking words are used mechanically. The first body paragraph moves from complicated lives to lack of technology and jobs without clearly showing how these points relate. The final body paragraph also shifts rapidly from social media to perfectionism and isolation. Use shorter, more clearly organised sentences, and make the relationship between each claim and its supporting explanation explicit. The unfinished sentence ending “made people more” also disrupts the flow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a relevant range of vocabulary for the topic, including “pressure,” “quality of life,” “perfection,” “isolation” and “self confidence.” These terms allow you to discuss several possible causes of stress. However, word choice and collocation are often inaccurate or repetitive, which sometimes makes the meaning less clear. For example, “the ancient generation” and “our anceators” are not natural ways to refer to earlier generations, while “the comparision on it” is unclear. There are also noticeable spelling errors, including “belive,” “addtion” and “confidance.” Aim for more precise, natural phrases and check spelling carefully; this will make your ideas easier to understand and give your vocabulary greater control.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses introduced by “because,” “while” and “where,” and you communicate your overall argument despite grammatical errors. However, control is inconsistent, particularly in longer sentences. For example, “While some argue that stress nowadays has reduced and the ancient generation had to deal with pressure more than us” is a dependent clause presented as a complete sentence. There are also errors in agreement and sentence construction, as in “people’s life were” and “all people … they are living.” Punctuation is sometimes missing or misplaced, making sentences run together. Practise building complete sentences with a clear subject and verb, and divide long explanations into shorter units while retaining some accurate complex structures.
