IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some societies, stress is now regarded as a major problem, and it is thought that people suffer from more stress than they did in the past. However, others feel that the amount of stress people have today is exaggerated. They say that previous generations were under more pressure, but the idea of suffering from stress did not exist.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

It is belived that stress is now exaggerated than before. It is now counted as a major obstacle, whereas, individuals used to be more under pressure but the idea of stress back then did not existed.

Overall, Some people argue that people in this modern era share there thoughts more openly. Just a little pressure makes them anxious and stressful. For instance, now-a-days youngsters try to commit suicide because of a bad result. However, if they don't get a thing thats out of their boundry they will become reckless. As a result, it creates issue both for them and their family. They try to isolate them or even they avoid socializing.

Other people argue that, orthodox people used be more in pressure and even they used to felt suffocated due to the lack of technologoy or society.

Back then, people use to judge by their relatives more for their scores or for their class , because , those days social media was not avaiable. For that , they were unable to share their each thoughts or experiences. They used to stay at home after their study or work. They did not knew that 'stress' kind of word do exist. They used to count their suffocation as a normal attitude.

In my perspective, I largely think that the modern people are taking everything as a competition and as a result they become stressful.Whereas, in ancient era people used to lived simple life.

To summarize, stress should be count as a minor object. People should take care of their mental health as it is connected to our body.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You address both views and give a personal position, particularly in the paragraph beginning “In my perspective,” where you argue that modern competition increases stress. The examples about young people reacting to poor results and earlier generations facing family judgement are relevant. However, the discussion is only partly developed: the claim that young people may attempt suicide is serious but is not explained or supported, and the earlier-generation paragraph does not clearly show why their pressures were greater. Your conclusion that stress should be “count as a minor object” also conflicts with your concern for mental health and leaves your final position unclear. Explain each view more fully and make your judgement consistent from introduction to conclusion.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has a recognisable structure, with an opening, separate paragraphs for the two views, your opinion, and a conclusion. This helps readers identify the main sections. However, progression within paragraphs is often difficult to follow: the first discussion moves from openness to suicide, unmet expectations, and isolation without clearly connecting these points. Linking phrases such as “However,” “As a result,” and “To summarize” are used, but some do not express the relationship between ideas accurately. References such as “they” and “those days” can also be unclear. Organise each body paragraph around one central claim, then explain and illustrate it in a logical sequence, using transitions only where their meaning is precise.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You attempt vocabulary relevant to the topic, including “major obstacle,” “under pressure,” “suffocated,” and “socializing,” and you communicate the general subject of stress and social expectations. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate, sometimes making the intended meaning hard to interpret. For example, “stress is now exaggerated than before” does not clearly express whether stress itself has increased or whether concern about it is exaggerated; “minor object” is also unsuitable for describing stress. There are noticeable spelling errors, including “belived,” “boundry,” and “technologoy.” Build a more precise set of topic phrases and check spelling and word forms carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You use both simple sentences and attempts at longer structures, including contrast with “whereas” and cause-and-effect clauses such as “As a result, it creates issue.” However, errors are frequent, and some sentences are difficult to understand. Examples include “the idea of stress back then did not existed,” “people used to felt suffocated,” and “people used to lived simple life,” where verb forms are incorrect. There are also problems with articles, agreement, and sentence boundaries, as in “it creates issue” and “result.However.” Practise past-tense patterns after “used to” and “did,” and check subject–verb agreement, articles, and punctuation. Aim for accurate simple sentences before adding more complex structures.
