IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some societies, stress is now regarded as a major problem, and it is thought that people suffer from more stress than they did in the past. However, others feel that the amount of stress people have today is exaggerated. They say that previous generations were under more pressure, but the idea of suffering from stress did not exist.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
Stress is a rising issue these days, it is argued that people are facing more stress than in the past. In contrast many people argue that level of stress is just exaggerated today, in the past people were more under pressure, but the idea of suffering stress did not exist. In this essay I will discuss both aspects before presenting my own opinion.
First and foremost, stress is an essential mental issue these days, many people suffering from this isuse. many argued that these days the stress level is more than in past. There are several factors one is that these days life is so fast and very compitative and individauls more under the pressure to perform better to stay relevent. Furthermore, these days people are living alone more. Therefore, sometime they have not anyone for share their problems. They feel lonliness and stressful, these days family system are become weak the famliy support is lacking these days.
On the other hand, many argue that it is exaggerated, in the past these people face more stress then now. There are many hardships in the past lack of facilities and limited entertainment facility. There was no internet facility and fast conectivity, people are facing huge amount of pressure but there was no stress types problem in those days because our mind feel those things which we feel more and talk about on those things.
In conclusion, in my opinion I believe it is

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
You introduce both views and give relevant reasons: modern competition, isolation and weaker family support are contrasted with past hardship and fewer facilities. However, the discussion is only partial and the final sentence, “in my opinion I believe it is”, leaves your own position unfinished. The arguments are also asserted rather than supported with a specific example or explanation; for instance, the claim that people in the past faced “huge amount of pressure” is not developed. The response is 8 words below the required minimum, and the incomplete conclusion further limits how fully you address the task. To improve, state your view clearly and complete it, then explain and illustrate each side with relevant examples.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, one paragraph for each view, and a conclusion. Transitions such as “First and foremost” and “On the other hand” help signal the change in perspective. However, progression within paragraphs is uneven, and several ideas are joined in long, unclear sequences, particularly the opening of the first body paragraph. Linking words such as “these days” and “therefore” are repeated, while the conclusion stops before completing the argument, weakening the overall flow. Organise each body paragraph around one main point, connect its explanation to that point, and use a wider range of clear references and transitions.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “pressure,” “facilities,” “family support,” and “loneliness,” and you attempt to express ideas about modern life and past hardship. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate, which sometimes makes the meaning less clear. Examples include “stress types problem,” “fast connectivity,” and “people are living alone more.” Spelling errors such as “compitative,” “relevent,” and “lonliness” also reduce accuracy. Build a more precise set of phrases for discussing causes and effects of stress, and check spelling and collocations during revision so your ideas are easier to follow.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including a contrast introduced by “On the other hand” and a cause-and-effect link with “Therefore.” However, the range is limited, and frequent errors in sentence formation and verb patterns can make the reader work to understand your meaning. For example, “many people suffering from this issue” lacks a finite verb, while “these days family system are become weak” has problems with agreement and verb form. The opening sentence also joins two independent clauses with only a comma. Practise forming complete sentences, checking subject–verb agreement and verb forms, and using full stops or suitable conjunctions to separate ideas.
