IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some societies, stress is now regarded as a major problem, and it is thought that people suffer from more stress than they did in the past. However, others feel that the amount of stress people have today is exaggerated. They say that previous generations were under more pressure, but the idea of suffering from stress did not exist.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
In our generation, stress becomes the most important topic according to people. They think that they are more suffer than the older generation did, while other's argue that they are hyperbolised the stress because older generation people take more mental pressure which did not exist. There are several reasons behind these views. One of the most important reasons is the generation gap. This essay will explain both views and state why i support the latter view.
On the one hand, in our generation, most people depend on technology. They are fully based on modern technology which makes the life easier. Most of the work or anything else have done by technology. For example, nowadays, people do not go to market for shopping, they can do it at home using online platform. At the end, people become bore and started overthinking which causes stress. Closely linked to this view is that our face to face communication was reducing. Most individuals prefer to use online communication. As a resulth they did not express their full of feelings which cause higher the stress level. Also online communication did not help to grow a strong bond among themselves. Therefore, the younger generation is losing their individulity and becoming more introverted.
On the other hand, people in previouse generation were more productive and organised. They would try to work by themselves. They did not become burden on anyone. Older generation people, for instance, did their shopping or other works independently. So that, they had not enough time to be bore or thinking useless things which help them to relieve from mental pressure. Similarly, They would communicate face to face interaction which helps them to create a strong bond among themselves. Consequently, They become more active which makes them relaxed and refreshed.
In conclusion, the excessive use of technology is one of the main reasons for increased stress in our generation which mekes us more lazy and unproductive.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You address both views and state a position, saying you support the view that stress today is exaggerated. The two body paragraphs also offer relevant reasons, including technology, reduced face-to-face communication, and older generations’ independence. However, the discussion is only partly developed: the first view is presented mainly through claims that technology causes boredom and overthinking, while the second relies on generalisations about older people being productive and having less time to worry. The conclusion focuses on technology rather than clearly restating your comparison of the two views. To strengthen the response, explain more precisely how these factors create or reduce pressure, and support each point with a specific example or a clearer link to the question of stress across generations.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable overall structure: an introduction, two paragraphs presenting contrasting views, and a conclusion. Signposting such as “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “In conclusion” helps readers follow the organisation. Within paragraphs, however, progression is sometimes mechanical or unclear. For example, “At the end” does not clearly show how shopping online leads to stress, and “Closely linked to this view” introduces a related point without fully explaining the connection. Some references are also difficult to follow, as in “they did not express their full of feelings.” Improve cohesion by making the cause-and-effect links explicit and using pronouns only when their referents are clear. The paragraphing is appropriate, but the links between individual claims need more careful development.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use vocabulary relevant to the topic, including “mental pressure,” “face to face communication,” “overthinking,” and “strong bond,” and you attempt some less common expressions such as “generation gap” and “independently.” However, the range is limited and several inaccurate word choices or collocations make parts of the argument awkward, for example “hyperbolised the stress,” “become bore,” and “relieve from mental pressure.” Spelling errors such as “previouse,” “individulity,” and “mekes” also reduce accuracy. These issues do not prevent the reader from understanding the main ideas, but they make the expression less precise. Build a more reliable set of topic phrases and check word forms and spelling; for instance, use natural combinations such as “exaggerate the problem” and “feel bored.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including relative clauses in “technology which makes the life easier” and a conditional-style explanation beginning “which causes stress.” However, control is inconsistent, and errors in verb forms, agreement, articles, and sentence construction sometimes make the meaning difficult to process. Examples include “they are more suffer,” “Most of the work … have done,” and “our face to face communication was reducing.” The sentence beginning “They think that…” also contains an unclear clause about older generations and pressure. Work on forming complete clauses and maintaining consistent tense, especially when comparing present and past generations. More accurate simple sentences would make your ideas clearer before you add complex structures.
