IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some societies, stress is now regarded as a major problem, and it is thought that people suffer from more stress than they did in the past. However, others feel that the amount of stress people have today is exaggerated. They say that previous generations were under more pressure, but the idea of suffering from stress did not exist.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.

Student answer (Band 4.0)

Now,a days stress is the major problem all over the world. In the past people do more strugle due to the stress. In my opinion so many ideas to deal with stress.

The main problem of stress is some people did very bad things in past so they have regret in the present so they feel so much stress.Such people remember these thing so they feel emberessed. For example people hurt any person in the past so it remember this hurtness along the life.In my opionon the solution of this problem people don't take a stress so opologize this person.

The early generation have so much stress.People don't have any idea to deal with stress and they strugle to deal with stress. Some people take alot of concern about future and take a stress and some people worry about the work and suitable employment. For example some people works in company so they have alot of work burdend from the company so they feel nervous and worry about there jobs.In my opinion the best idea to deal with stress is walking alone in the garden in peaceful environment and others one is listen up a songs. Moreover, meditation is best way to overcome the stress.

Some up,these people do anything in past they leave that thing or don't remember along the life.you have a more stress due to the burdan and job so you have a ability to deal with this.overall you contact with doctor they help to overcome the stress.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.5

The response attempts to discuss stress in the past and present and offers suggestions such as walking, listening to music and meditation. However, it does not clearly explain the two views in the question: whether people today experience more stress, and whether earlier generations faced greater pressure but lacked the term for it. Instead, much of the essay focuses on regret about past actions and ways to manage stress, which only partly addresses the prompt. Your own position is also unclear: the opening says stress is a major problem, but the conclusion shifts to advice without stating which view you support. The response is six words below the required minimum. To improve, explain both perspectives directly, state your opinion, and develop each point with relevant examples.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0

There is a basic paragraph structure, with separate paragraphs for causes, earlier generations and a conclusion, so the reader can identify some stages of the response. However, the ideas do not progress clearly from the two views in the question to your opinion. For example, the first body paragraph about regretting past actions is not clearly connected to the comparison between stress today and in earlier times. Linking phrases such as “For example” and “Moreover” are used, but connections between sentences are often unclear, and the conclusion introduces advice about contacting a doctor rather than drawing together the discussion. Organise the essay around the two viewpoints, then add a distinct paragraph or clear concluding statement for your position.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

You use some relevant vocabulary, including “stress,” “future,” “employment,” “nervous,” “peaceful environment” and “meditation,” which helps communicate the general topic. However, the range is limited and several words or phrases are repeated, particularly “stress” and “deal with stress.” Some inaccurate word choices and spelling make meaning less clear, such as “hurtness,” “burdend” and “listen up a songs.” Aim to use more precise expressions for the task, such as “work-related pressure,” “financial concerns” or “previous generations,” and check spelling and natural word combinations. This would make your ideas clearer and reduce repetition while keeping the vocabulary appropriate to the subject.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response mainly uses simple sentence patterns, with a few attempts to connect ideas using “so,” “because” and “for example.” Some sentences communicate a basic meaning, but errors in verb forms, agreement, articles and sentence construction are frequent. For instance, “people do more strugle” does not use an appropriate verb form, while “some people works in company” has agreement and article problems. In “so it remember this hurtness,” the pronoun and verb structure are difficult to follow. Punctuation and spacing after commas also need attention. Practise building accurate simple sentences first, then combine them into longer sentences using clear clauses and correct subject–verb agreement.
