IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some societies, stress is now regarded as a major problem, and it is thought that people suffer from more stress than they did in the past. However, others feel that the amount of stress people have today is exaggerated. They say that previous generations were under more pressure, but the idea of suffering from stress did not exist.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
During recent times, stress has become a significant issue and it is believed by many that its prevalence is more common these day than it was previously. On the other hand, some people believe that stress is over-rated these days because previous generations had stress but the concept of anxiety was not there.I firmly believe, stress is more common these days due to the advancement in technology.
On the one hand, people argue that stress is a substantial challange in recent times. This is mainly because of the advancement in technology. To explain this, social media has become very popular, people have an easy access to other's life. Therefore, there is a constant pressure among individuals to be better than others. As a result, people suffer through more stress and anxiety. To illustrate, young girls see influencers carrying expensive bags, which are out of their budget so they feel stressed about it. And people from low income families undergo inferiority complexes. So i agree with the concept of more stress in present times.
On the other hand, many people believe that during past concept of feeling stressed was not present, it is due to the fact people previously had very simple standards of living. To describe, there was no technology in the past and people were only concerned about their better living and there was no rivalry among individuals. Thats why, prevalence of stress was almost zero in the past. For example, there was no concept of brands during past and people were less conscious about their standards.
To conclude, although there was no concept of suffering from stress in past, from my perspective, stress has become more prevalent during recent times owing to the advancement of technology.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address both views and state a clear opinion: you argue that stress is more prevalent today because of technological change. The discussion of social media, comparison with influencers, and pressure to match others gives the first view a relevant example. The opposing view is also presented through simpler past lifestyles and fewer status comparisons. However, this side is less fully developed: the claim that stress was “almost zero” is too absolute and is not supported by evidence showing how earlier pressures differed. Your conclusion restates your position, but the response would be stronger if it acknowledged that past generations faced other serious pressures and explained why modern stress is nevertheless more widespread or visible.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, one paragraph for each view, and a conclusion. The progression from social-media comparison to stress is easy to follow, and signposts such as “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “To conclude” make the organisation explicit. This meets the lower-band expectations securely and shows some control of progression. However, cohesion is occasionally mechanical, with repeated “To explain/To describe” and “As a result” patterns. Some links between claims need clearer reasoning: for example, the assertion that past stress was “almost zero” follows from the absence of technology without considering other pressures. Improve paragraph flow by varying transitions and making the relationship between each example and its main claim explicit.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range for the topic, including “prevalence,” “substantial challenge,” “inferiority complexes,” and “conscious about their standards.” These choices help communicate ideas about social comparison and pressure, and the meaning remains clear overall. There are, however, some inaccurate or unnatural choices that limit precision: “its prevalence is more common” is redundant, “over-rated” does not quite express the idea of stress being exaggerated, and “easy access to other's life” is awkwardly formed. Spelling slips such as “challange” and “Thats” also reduce control. Aim for more natural collocations and precise wording, particularly when describing how stress has changed over time.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including cause-and-effect structures such as “This is mainly because…” and a concessive conclusion beginning “although.” Most ideas can be understood, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “these day” needs plural agreement, “people had stress but the concept … was not there” needs clearer tense and clause structure, and “people have an easy access to other's life” has problems with article use and number. Several sentences also run together, as in “social media has become very popular, people have an easy access…,” while missing spaces after full stops affect punctuation. Work on sentence boundaries, agreement, articles, and possessives while retaining your attempts at complex structures.
