IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some societies, stress is now regarded as a major problem, and it is thought that people suffer from more stress than they did in the past. However, others feel that the amount of stress people have today is exaggerated. They say that previous generations were under more pressure, but the idea of suffering from stress did not exist.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You address both perspectives: the first paragraph argues that people today are less mentally tough and face a faster lifestyle, while the next suggests earlier generations had fewer entertainment options and less education. Your conclusion also gives a preference for the first view. However, the discussion is only partially developed: the claims about emotional weakness and entertainment are broad, and the examples of surveys and news reports are not explained or clearly connected to the arguments. The position is also not fully clear at the start, where the opening mainly announces that the essay will compare views. To strengthen the response, explain why each factor increases or reduces stress, use more specific supporting examples, and state your own view clearly before the conclusion.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has an opening, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a concluding paragraph, so there is some basic organisation. The reader can generally identify which side each paragraph discusses. However, progression within paragraphs is difficult to follow, and linking phrases are often mechanical or unclear. For example, “Initiating with the first school of thought” and “to justify it” do not clearly connect the claims to their explanations; the long opening sentence also combines several ideas without clear punctuation. The conclusion repeats points rather than drawing the discussion together. Use a clear topic sentence for each body paragraph, develop one main idea at a time, and use linking words only where they show a precise relationship between ideas.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You attempt a range of topic-related vocabulary, including “fast paced lifestyle,” “problematic situations,” “plethora of anxiety,” and “educational institutes.” This shows an effort to discuss stress in varied terms. However, the range is limited by frequent inaccurate or unnatural word choices and spelling errors, which sometimes make the intended meaning difficult to follow. Phrases such as “stress masses are taking,” “emotional content,” and “less problem solving people” are not natural ways to express the ideas. Several words are also misspelled, including “eassay,” “opnions,” and “firsk.” Aim for precise, conventional collocations and check spelling carefully; for example, describe people as “experiencing stress” and refer to “limited problem-solving skills.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and longer sentence forms, including explanations introduced by “because” and examples introduced by “for example.” However, complex sentences are often faulty, and frequent errors in agreement, articles, sentence boundaries, and punctuation can make the argument hard to read. Examples include “Other inhabitants says,” “people who holds,” and “a issue”; these require agreement and article corrections. The opening also runs several clauses together, while the final sentence, “in which favour he or she in in,” is incomplete and unclear. Practise building accurate sentences around one main clause, then add a subordinate clause where needed. Check subject–verb agreement, articles, and full stops before submitting.
