IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some societies, stress is now regarded as a major problem, and it is thought that people suffer from more stress than they did in the past. However, others feel that the amount of stress people have today is exaggerated. They say that previous generations were under more pressure, but the idea of suffering from stress did not exist.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Stress is become a major issue in modern societies, and it is argue that people suffer from more stress while, other think people in the past faced more pressure but did not recognise it as stress. This essay will discuss both prespectives, and i believe that previous generations faced more hardships but modern lifestyles have created new and continuos sources of stress.

To embark on, there are plethora of reasons that modern generations faced a lot of stress. Out of which the predominent one is, students are under constant pressure to achieve a good grades and compete with each other and get excellent academic results also some students do a lot of hardwork in sports to grow their name. The another reason is adults have to deal with long working hours and a lot of financial responsibilities on their shoulders. Furthermore, the widespread of social media can people compare their lives with other and achievement with others. And, i causes a lot of jelousy, dissatisfaction and anxiety. All of this make modern lifestyle stressful.

On the other hand, some argue that people faced a lot of pressure in the past and this generation today is overstated. As previous people faced a lot of pressure such as limited healthcare system, eduaction system and a lot of wars and to cope up with poverty. These circumstances has a lot of pressure on them, even though they not desribed these feelings in terms of stress.

Nevertheless, from my prespective, i believe that the difficulties faced by previous generation is not less but, modern lifestyle create too much stress which affect on their mental well being and on their physical health. Constant demands and to maintain good lifestyle create more stress.

To recapitulate, both the view points are valid upto certain extent. So, we cannot favour or oppose any of the sides completely. But still, i reckon that, both generations have faced significant challenges, but the constant nature of modern pressure make stress a major issue in the society.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both views and give a position: the essay recognises past hardships while arguing that modern life creates new, continuous pressures. The examples of academic competition, long working hours, financial responsibilities and social media are relevant and help explain the modern view. You also mention limited healthcare, education, war and poverty when presenting the opposing view. However, these points are not developed equally: the past pressures are listed rather than illustrated or compared in detail, and the conclusion’s claim that both generations faced significant challenges does not fully resolve which period you consider more stressful. Explain the effects of one or two examples and make your final judgement more precise to strengthen the response.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, your own position and a conclusion. This makes the discussion easy to follow, and signposts such as “On the other hand” and “Nevertheless” help show the direction of the argument. The progression is generally logical, but some linking is mechanical or unclear. For example, “Out of which” begins a fragment, while “And, i causes” does not clearly connect to the preceding point. The final paragraph also repeats the idea that both generations faced challenges without adding a distinct concluding insight. Use fewer formulaic transitions and connect each example explicitly to the claim it supports; clearer referencing would make the flow more natural.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “financial responsibilities,” “widespread of social media,” “dissatisfaction,” “hardships” and “mental well being.” These choices communicate the main ideas, and some topic-specific language helps distinguish modern pressures from past difficulties. There are, however, several inaccurate word forms, spellings and collocations, such as “prespectives,” “predominant,” “grow their name,” “cope up with poverty” and “view points.” These errors do not prevent understanding, but they reduce precision and naturalness. Aim to use familiar collocations accurately rather than reaching for awkward phrases, and check spelling and word forms carefully. For instance, “gain recognition” is more natural than “grow their name,” and “cope with poverty” is the standard expression.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses introduced by “while,” “but” and “even though,” and the overall meaning is usually clear. Some sentences are controlled, such as “This essay will discuss both perspectives,” but errors in verb forms, agreement, articles and sentence construction recur. Examples include “Stress is become,” “it is argue,” “students … achieve a good grades,” and “These circumstances has.” The sentence beginning “Out of which” is also incomplete, and “even though they not described” is missing an auxiliary verb. These are some grammatical errors that rarely block the message, but they limit accuracy. Practise checking each sentence for a complete subject–verb structure, correct tense and agreement, and vary complex forms while keeping them accurate.
