IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some societies, stress is now regarded as a major problem, and it is thought that people suffer from more stress than they did in the past. However, others feel that the amount of stress people have today is exaggerated. They say that previous generations were under more pressure, but the idea of suffering from stress did not exist.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

In current generation, stress is one of the important problem, and as compare to past people of present generation are suffer more. although., other belives that current stress is not that much. They saying the past people were in more pressure but sufferd from the stress. in my opinion, current genration have more stress then people who live in past and before reaching to conclusion both points were disscussed in below body paragraphs.

To start with first view. chaging in morden lifestyle brigs lots of new challanges and also stress comes from that responsibility. In simple word, peope of 21st century genration are unable to find jobs because of replaced by ai and additionally, they need to enhance their skills to surpass the compitions. for example, artificial intellegent is impriving day by day and because of this people are not getting job and result of that it convertd to worry about their future and rise stress level. also, current generation compition have been rising as compare to past genration, moreover, for simple jobs people need lots of certificates and skills and for this improvemet some of them get into stress.

On the other side, past people lived their life in simple manner because they dont have to worry about getting replaced by some computuer. In other words, they can get a job because there were no tough compition and also people were that time was able to run family with simple finance. for example, before 20th century high demand were getting increased in many field and the qulification requirement were very low so people can easiy got job in their younger generation and now people faced many dificulties.

In conclusion, i belive that current genration facing many tough situation like facing difficulties of getting jobs with lots of degree and skills also have fear of replacing by the ai increase stress, however, in past there was no such improvemt needed for jobs so amount of pressuer were not that much high.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You address both views and state a clear preference: you argue that people today face greater stress, mainly because of job insecurity and pressure to gain qualifications. The examples about AI replacing workers and the demands of modern employment are relevant. However, the discussion is only partly developed. The view that earlier generations faced more pressure is presented mostly as an absence of competition and technology, without considering other possible pressures or explaining why people may not have used the term “stress.” Your conclusion repeats your position but does not add much support. To strengthen the response, explain both sides more fully and connect each example explicitly to the question of whether stress is greater today or simply more recognised.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, a paragraph for each view, and a conclusion. Phrases such as “To start with” and “On the other side” help signal the change in viewpoint. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes difficult to follow, and linking is often mechanical or inaccurate. For example, “also” and “moreover” are used to add points without clearly showing how they relate, while “In simple word” does not introduce the example smoothly. Some sentences combine several claims, making the line of reasoning unclear. Use clearer topic sentences, develop one main point at a time, and make references such as “they” or “this” unambiguous. This would make the overall organisation easier to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You attempt vocabulary relevant to the topic, including “responsibility,” “replaced by AI,” “qualification requirement,” and “future.” These choices help communicate the main ideas, but the range is limited and several word-choice, collocation, and spelling errors make parts of the response difficult to read. Examples include “current generation,” “in more pressure,” “tough competition,” and “rise stress level”; these are not natural or accurate combinations. Misspellings such as “challanges,” “intellegent,” and “dificulties” also occur repeatedly. Build a bank of accurate topic phrases, such as “job insecurity” and “pressure to acquire new skills,” and check spelling and word forms carefully. More precise vocabulary would help distinguish stress from general difficulty.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and longer sentences, including cause-and-effect structures with “because” and “as a result.” However, the range is limited, and complex sentences are often faulty, so the reader must sometimes work to understand the meaning. For example, “people of present generation are suffer more” has an incorrect verb form, while “people were that time was able” contains a confusing clause structure. There are also frequent problems with articles, agreement, plurals, and punctuation, as in “stress is one of the important problem” and the lower-case sentence openings. Practise building accurate sentences with one main clause and a clearly attached supporting clause, then check verb forms and sentence boundaries.
