IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some societies, stress is now regarded as a major problem, and it is thought that people suffer from more stress than they did in the past. However, others feel that the amount of stress people have today is exaggerated. They say that previous generations were under more pressure, but the idea of suffering from stress did not exist.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
Nowadays, stress is a pressing issue all over the globe due to numerous challenges for everyone related to all aspects of life. In some particular areas, anxiety is considered to be a major issue and most people suffer from it instead of the past. Despite as, some people belive that stress was present between the ancient people but at present, the proportion of anxiety is gradually declined rather than past. I believe that stress is the most highlighted issue of the present time due to some reasons.
First of all, it is widely acknowledged that inflation is at peak level at the present time. Moreover, inflation plays a pivotal role for increasing the amount of stress. What I mean by this is that in order to meet the financial expanses for family and their ownself, people engage in anxiety. The present generation also suffers from more stress instead of the last generation because their forefathers don't leave something for themselves. For instance, business or some property. If government takes some precautions about this burning matter by increasing the wages for employees or maintain the utilitiess bills, then stress will mitigate.
On the other hand, some people argue that the amount of stress is dropped recently. A compelling arguement can be made for those people who have well-settled business or a huge amount of property from their ancestors. Meanwhile, the last generation was more under pressure due to scarcity of resources. For example, markets were far away from their homes. Average household items were not available on utility stores. Furthermore, stress was not eliminated from their lives because sometimes people may suffered from diseases or epidemics. A direct consequence of this is that people suffered from stress.
In conclusion, although is considered that the previous generation had much under pressure as compared to the present generation due to availability of facilities. Personally, I believe that the current generation suffers from more anxiety due to financial crises.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You address both views and state your own position: you argue that current financial pressures create more stress, while the opposing paragraph mentions past scarcity and illness. Inflation and inherited property are relevant examples, so the response is on task. However, the discussion is only partly developed. The claim that earlier generations faced scarcity is not clearly compared with present-day pressures, and the examples about distant markets and unavailable household goods need explanation of how they affected stress. Your conclusion also refers to the previous generation being under pressure, but its opening is incomplete and the contrast with your opinion is not fully clarified. Develop each view with a clearer explanation and a specific supporting example.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a conclusion. Signposts such as “First of all,” “On the other hand,” and “In conclusion” help readers follow the broad direction. Within paragraphs, however, progression is sometimes uneven: the first body paragraph moves from inflation to inheritance and then to government action without clearly linking each point to the central argument. Some connections are also mechanical or unclear, as in “Despite as” and “A direct consequence of this,” whose reference is not precise. The conclusion’s opening is difficult to follow. Use clearer links between claim, explanation, and example, and make references explicit to improve the flow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a range of topic-related vocabulary, including “inflation,” “scarcity of resources,” “financial crises,” and “epidemics,” and you attempt more formal expressions such as “pivotal role” and “compelling argument.” This gives you enough vocabulary to discuss the topic, but inaccurate word choice, collocation, and spelling are noticeable and sometimes make meaning less clear. For example, “financial expanses” does not express the intended idea of expenses, while “engage in anxiety” is an unnatural combination. “The proportion of anxiety is gradually declined” also uses an unsuitable noun and word form. Check spelling and choose natural collocations; precise, familiar wording is more effective than formal phrases used inaccurately.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including a conditional structure: “If government takes some precautions … then stress will mitigate.” However, control is inconsistent, and errors in sentence construction and verb forms sometimes make the meaning difficult to follow. For example, “Despite as” does not form a correct introductory clause, and “although is considered that” is missing a clear subject and has an incomplete structure. In “people may suffered,” the modal is not followed by the correct verb form; “the amount of stress is dropped” also has an unsuitable tense construction. Practise building complete clauses, checking subject–verb relationships, and using consistent verb forms, especially in longer sentences.
