IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some societies, stress is now regarded as a major problem, and it is thought that people suffer from more stress than they did in the past. However, others feel that the amount of stress people have today is exaggerated. They say that previous generations were under more pressure, but the idea of suffering from stress did not exist.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
Stress is regarded as a major problem in all generations. some people argue that today generation suffer from more stress than in old generation. While some argue that old generation were undergoing more stress than today generation. This essay will discuss both views and will give my opnion too in the end of this essay.
In the one hand, today generation is bearing more stress than old generation this is because financial need is increased and a oppurinity for get a nice jobs is diffcult because population is increasing but jobs remains the same as a result more people are stress about money to bear all financial needs to look after house, electricity bills, utility bils and education. for example if a individual had a limited income he had to look after his family need ,house rent, bills of all kind and education of children this result in more stress about meeting all ends.
While,on the other hand, old generation was more stressed than new generation because old generation didnt had all the facilities and education as a result they were trying hard to live under limited circumstances . for instances old generation didnt had education to get a nice qualified jobs as a result they were more into agriculture with limited amount recieved , they burn thier ends to meet the financial need.there for old generation were more stressed than today generation.
In conclusion, both the generations were under alot of different kind of stress. so a individual cant calculate which generation were more in stress.but in my opnion old generation were more stressed as they didnt had any facilities or oppurnity to grew more as a result they tend to live under limited resources and finances.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You address both views and give a clear personal preference in the conclusion: you consider financial pressures today, then argue that earlier generations faced greater hardship because they had fewer facilities and opportunities. These points are relevant, and the examples about bills, education and agricultural work help illustrate them. However, the discussion is only partly developed. The present-day argument focuses mainly on financial pressure, while the earlier-generation argument relies on broad claims about limited education and resources; neither explains in much depth how these conditions compare with stress today. Your position also shifts slightly: the introduction promises an opinion at the end, and the conclusion says comparison is difficult before favouring the past. Explain this qualification and support the comparison more fully.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable overall structure: an introduction, one paragraph for each view, and a conclusion. The contrast between the two main paragraphs is easy to follow, and phrases such as “on the other hand” signal the change in viewpoint. However, some linking is mechanical or inaccurate, including “In the one hand” and “there for,” and several ideas are joined in long chains with repeated “as a result.” This makes the progression within paragraphs less smooth. References such as “old generation” and “today generation” are also repeated rather than varied, and the conclusion introduces the idea that comparison is impossible without clearly connecting it to the opinion that follows. Use clearer sentence boundaries and more precise transitions between claims and examples.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “financial needs,” “limited circumstances,” “population,” and “resources,” so the main ideas are generally understandable. However, the range is limited and several phrases are repeated, especially “stress,” “old generation,” and “today generation.” There are also noticeable spelling and word-choice problems, such as “opportunity,” “difficult,” “received,” and “opinion,” which are misspelled, as well as unnatural expressions like “burn their ends to meet” and “meet all ends.” These errors sometimes make the intended meaning less clear. Build a more precise set of collocations for discussing pressure and hardship, and check spelling carefully. For example, use “make ends meet” rather than “meet all ends.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including cause-and-effect structures with “because” and “as a result,” and the reader can usually identify your main point. However, the range is limited, and complex sentences are often faulty or run together. Examples include “today generation suffer,” “old generation were,” and “a individual had,” where agreement or article use is incorrect. In “old generation didnt had,” the verb form after “didn’t” is also incorrect. Punctuation is frequently missing after introductory phrases and between clauses, as in “While,on the other hand” and the long sentence beginning “today generation is bearing more stress.” Practise accurate subject–verb agreement, articles, and past-tense forms, and divide long sentences into clearer units.
