IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some societies, stress is now regarded as a major problem, and it is thought that people suffer from more stress than they did in the past. However, others feel that the amount of stress people have today is exaggerated. They say that previous generations were under more pressure, but the idea of suffering from stress did not exist.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The idea of stress has gain more weight in current times.People from back in times were less stressfull as compared to taday's generation. Stress has become a mojor issue in recent times, while some people thinks that this generation has make a stress big thing and they debate about the people in past were under the most pressure as compared to contemporary generation but the concept of mental exhausion or stress did'nt exsist at that time. We're going to disscuss both point of views in this essay.

In recent times technology has become more wide and esasy to access, and today's children has more exposure to wordly things as compared to past generation. Methods of teaching and schooling has been changed.Study has become one major stress in today's generation. For example a kid 5th grade is learning things that 16 yaer old kid learn back in time or today's student need a laptop to study while they don't and they are dealings with more things at a time as compared to back in days.Secondly the inflamation was'nt common at that time but in today's world people have to struggle hard to earn bead and butter.People have more pressure to earn as compared to old generation.Modern world's comes with it's own previlages and draw back.Today's society make life's hard ,back in day's life was simple.

I believe that today's genration has a lot in their pockets to deal with as compared to people in past.Stress do exsist in both time but people were not educated enough to understand that. We should work on mental well being and fitness rather debating it over.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You address the topic and give a clear view that people today face more pressures, while also acknowledging that stress existed in the past but was less understood. Your examples about schooling, technology and earning a living are relevant. However, the discussion of the opposing view is brief: you mention that earlier generations faced pressure, but do not explain what those pressures were or why some people believe they were greater. Several claims, such as children studying more advanced material, also need clearer support. Develop both perspectives more evenly, then explain why your own view is more convincing.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, a paragraph about modern pressures, and a concluding opinion. Connectors such as “For example,” “Secondly,” and “I believe” help signal the direction of the argument. However, the progression within the main paragraph is not always clear: education, technology and financial pressure are introduced quickly, with limited explanation of how each supports the central point. The opposing view is not given its own developed paragraph, and some links are mechanical or unclear, particularly “but they debate about the people in past.” Use one paragraph for each view, make each paragraph’s main point explicit, and link examples directly to that point.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some topic-related vocabulary, including “mental well being,” “pressure,” “exposure,” and “draw back,” and you attempt phrases such as “earn bread and butter.” This gives you a basic range for discussing stress and social change. However, spelling errors and imprecise or unnatural expressions are frequent enough to distract the reader, for example “mojor,” “exhausion,” “inflamation,” and “previlages.” Some phrases are also unclear, such as “has more in their pockets to deal with.” Choose more precise collocations and check spelling carefully. For instance, “financial pressure” is clearer than “pressure to earn,” and “greater demands” could replace the vague “more things.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and longer sentences, including a contrast between past and present pressures and an example introduced with “For example.” However, control is inconsistent, and errors in agreement, verb forms, articles and sentence boundaries sometimes make the meaning difficult to follow. Examples include “some people thinks,” “today’s children has,” and “Stress do exsist”; these should use matching subject–verb forms. The opening also runs several ideas together without clear sentence boundaries. Practise building accurate sentences first, then combine them with clauses such as “although” or “because.” Check that each sentence has a clear subject and verb, and use punctuation to separate complete ideas.
