IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some societies, stress is now regarded as a major problem, and it is thought that people suffer from more stress than they did in the past. However, others feel that the amount of stress people have today is exaggerated. They say that previous generations were under more pressure, but the idea of suffering from stress did not exist.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.5

You state a position in the introduction (“I firmly agree”), and the body paragraphs attempt to give reasons involving phone use and relationship problems. These are relevant to modern stress, but the response does not clearly discuss both views in the prompt: it does not explain why earlier generations may have faced greater pressure or why stress might be exaggerated today. The examples are also too unclear to support the claims; for instance, “a recent study revealed” gives no finding, and the conclusion does not clearly restate a reasoned opinion. To improve, explain each side explicitly, then give a clear opinion and develop it with a specific, relevant example or explanation.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0

The response has an identifiable introduction, two body paragraphs and a conclusion, and transitions such as “to begin with,” “furthermore” and “in conclusion” show an attempt to guide the reader. However, the ideas within paragraphs do not progress clearly: the first moves from phone use to an unspecified study and then repeats that phones are harmful, while the second shifts among breakups, depression and brain damage without explaining the links. The conclusion is difficult to follow and does not bring the argument together. Use one main point per paragraph, explain it in a logical sequence, and make references such as “this” and “it” clearly identify the idea being discussed.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.0

You attempt some topic-related vocabulary, including “stress,” “relationship problems,” “painful situations” and “depressed,” so the reader can identify the general subject. However, the range is basic and repetitive, and inaccurate word choices often make the intended meaning difficult to understand. Phrases such as “people attracted in the phone,” “very depressedful situation” and “people for not strees only happiness” are not natural or clear expressions in English. Spelling errors such as “nottion,” “beacuse” and “perpect” also reduce accuracy. Build a small set of precise expressions for causes and effects of stress, and check spelling and collocations when revising.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

There is an attempt to use more than simple statements, including a reason clause (“This is because…”) and a result clause (“As a result…”). Some basic sentence boundaries and paragraph divisions are also present. However, sentence structures are often incomplete or incorrectly formed, which makes several claims hard to interpret. For example, “people attracted phone” lacks a correctly formed verb, and “to elaborates” does not fit the sentence pattern. Capitalisation and punctuation are inconsistent, including lowercase sentence openings and missing spaces after commas. Practise forming complete subject–verb sentences first, then add subordinate clauses, checking verb forms, articles and punctuation.
