IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some societies, stress is now regarded as a major problem, and it is thought that people suffer from more stress than they did in the past. However, others feel that the amount of stress people have today is exaggerated. They say that previous generations were under more pressure, but the idea of suffering from stress did not exist.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

In this contemprary world, it is widely contend that stress is a main issue of society and people currently are more stressful then previous. In contrast other believe that the current stress is exaggerated, they argue that the old genaration was in more stress but there was no idea of stress. As far as I am concerend stress is related to irregular body works because diciplanad person never feels stress.

One point of the people who glued the stress to modren generation is that ''use of social media''. They consider the stress comes from watching the bad situations like murders, corruption and injustice in the world. For instance the rapid incresing of crimes in the world forced the people to think about that which is an extra borden on brain that actually destroy the normal activities of the brain. Consequently these extra thing will cause stress and the last people will out of their mind.

On the other hand, many individuals believe that the current stress is just a rumor, means the people with a little stress consider themselves in high stress. However they also contend that the previous generations was under more stress but in that era, the people actually not understand the concept of stress. For instance, the old people has no idea about stress when they are in stress just have a cup of coffe and then being relaxed.

In conclusion stress is the thing we actually discovered when we have a problem. It is not a big thing we can control it easily and it not depend on generations.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You discuss both views and give a personal position, particularly in the opening and conclusion. The social-media example also offers a relevant reason why some people may feel more stressed today. However, the response only partially develops the task: the claim that stress comes from “watching the bad situations” is not clearly connected to how modern life creates greater pressure, and the opposing view is supported mainly by the anecdote about having “a cup of coffe.” Your opinion that stress is linked to irregular bodily functions and can be controlled is introduced but not explained or reconciled with the two views. Develop each side with clearer reasons and examples, then state a consistent, supported judgement.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a coherent overall arrangement: an introduction, a paragraph for each view, and a conclusion. Signposts such as “In contrast,” “For instance,” and “On the other hand” help readers follow the broad direction. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes unclear. In the first body paragraph, the link between social media, crime, brain activity, and stress is difficult to follow; the phrase “the last people will out of their mind” also interrupts the argument. The conclusion introduces the idea that stress is “the thing we actually discovered” without clearly drawing together the earlier discussion. Use clearer links between each claim and its explanation, and make references such as “these extra thing” more precise.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You attempt vocabulary relevant to the topic, including “social media,” “corruption,” “injustice,” and “previous generations,” and some choices communicate the general subject effectively. However, the range is limited and several inaccurate word choices or collocations make meaning unclear, such as “glued the stress to modren generation,” “extra borden on brain,” and “out of their mind.” Spelling errors are also noticeable, including “contemprary,” “genaration,” and “diciplanad.” These issues sometimes make the reader work to understand your point. Build a bank of accurate topic phrases and check spelling, word forms, and natural combinations before submitting.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You use both simple statements and attempts at longer sentences, including clauses introduced by “because,” “that,” and “when.” This shows some variety, but complex sentences are often not controlled accurately, and frequent errors can make relationships between ideas difficult to understand. For example, “the previous generations was under more stress” has a subject–verb agreement error, while “the people actually not understand” lacks an appropriate auxiliary. In “it not depend on generations,” the verb pattern is incomplete. Sentence boundaries and punctuation also need attention, particularly in the long sentence beginning “For instance the rapid incresing…” Practise accurate clause construction, agreement, and complete verb forms before adding more complexity.
