Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response addresses the task by summarizing the provided data, but the presentation of information is inconsistent and lacks clarity. While you identify some key features, the comparisons are often confusing or inaccurate. For example, you state the fifth company had the 'highest figure in staff member' (190), which is correct, but your description of the other companies is disorganized. The overview is weak and fails to highlight the most significant trends effectively. To improve, ensure you group data logically—perhaps by comparing categories across companies rather than listing details company-by-company—and ensure all figures are accurately reported to provide a clear summary for the reader.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organized into paragraphs, but the progression of ideas is disjointed. The use of cohesive devices is limited and sometimes mechanical, such as the repetitive use of 'the... company had'. Referencing is occasionally unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow the comparisons between the five companies. For instance, the transition between the third and fourth/fifth companies is abrupt. To improve, use a wider variety of linking words (e.g., 'in contrast', 'similarly', 'whereas') and ensure that each paragraph has a clear focus, such as grouping companies by size or demographic trends, rather than jumping between different metrics.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The range of vocabulary is limited and repetitive. You frequently use basic terms like 'figure', 'number', and 'percentage' without much variation. There are also several inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'male ration' (ratio), 'high in come bracket' (high-income bracket), and 'proportion of younger' (proportion of younger staff). These errors occasionally make the text difficult to interpret. To achieve a higher band, focus on using more precise terminology related to data description, such as 'the proportion of', 'the majority of', 'a significant minority', or 'the highest concentration of'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response relies heavily on simple sentence structures. There are frequent grammatical errors, including issues with articles ('the fifth company had highest figure'), subject-verb agreement, and word order. Punctuation is also inconsistent, with some sentences lacking proper structure or clarity. While the meaning is generally understandable, the high frequency of errors in basic grammar limits the score. To improve, practice constructing more complex sentences using relative clauses or subordinating conjunctions, and pay closer attention to basic proofreading to correct errors in articles and pluralization.
