Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response attempts to summarize the data but struggles to present a clear overview. While it identifies some key features, the reporting is often confusing or inaccurate. For example, the statement that the fifth company has a 'triple ratio' in staff compared to the first is unclear, and the comparison of staff turnover and age demographics is fragmented. The response lacks a coherent summary of the main trends, and the data points selected are not always presented in a way that makes the information easy to follow. To improve, focus on grouping related data logically and ensuring that comparisons are explicitly stated with clear reference to the specific companies involved.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is organized into paragraphs, but the flow of ideas is frequently interrupted by awkward phrasing and unclear referencing. While some cohesive devices are used, such as 'Interestingly,' 'Moreover,' and 'In addition,' they are often applied mechanically or do not effectively link the ideas. The progression of information is disjointed, making it difficult for the reader to follow the comparisons being made. For instance, the transition between discussing staff turnover and gender ratios is abrupt. Improving the logical connection between sentences and ensuring that pronouns clearly refer back to the correct subjects would significantly enhance the coherence of the report.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The range of vocabulary is limited and often used inaccurately. Phrases like 'staff conducting' and 'triple ratio' do not accurately convey the intended meaning, and there are issues with word choice throughout the text. The use of 'on peak' to describe the companies is non-standard, and the phrasing 'witnessed the half ratio' is awkward. While the student attempts to use some technical terms related to the data, the lack of precision in collocation and word choice hinders the clarity of the report. Expanding the vocabulary to include more precise terms for describing trends and proportions would be beneficial.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
There is a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but the accuracy is inconsistent. The text contains frequent errors in grammar, punctuation, and syntax, such as 'the tabular chart gives the information about the five small companies in the England' and '33%of the staff turnover witnessed in the fifth company'. The misuse of articles and prepositions is common, and the sentence construction is often clumsy, which occasionally impedes the reader's understanding. To reach a higher band, the student needs to focus on basic grammatical accuracy, particularly with subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles, while also working on more complex sentence structures.
