Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response addresses the task only partially. While the writer attempts to summarise the data from the table regarding five British companies, the selection of main features is disjointed and imprecise. Key information, such as staff numbers and demographic breakdowns, is mentioned, but the comparisons lack clarity and do not fully capture the significance of the dataset. For instance, statements such as 'the third company was seen highest among other companies' are vague and fail to specify which metric is being discussed. Furthermore, there are inaccuracies in the reporting of data, such as confusing the staff turnover figures with staff numbers. To reach a higher level, the response needs to select and accurately report the most striking trends and make precise, well-supported comparisons across all categories.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
There is some basic organisation with paragraph breaks, but the response lacks a clear overall progression. The introduction is confused by awkward phrasing and grammatical slips, failing to provide a clear overview of the data. Cohesive devices are used mechanically and sometimes inaccurately, such as the frequent repetition of 'the most number of' and vague transitions like 'On the other hand'. Referencing is often unclear, leaving the reader struggling to follow which company or category is being referred to in subsequent sentences. Paragraphing is attempted, but ideas within the paragraphs are not logically sequenced or properly connected. Improving the logical flow, using clearer referencing pronouns, and employing a wider range of accurate cohesive devices would greatly enhance the overall structure.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and repetitive, reflecting a minimally adequate range for the task. There are noticeable lexical errors and awkward word choices throughout the text, such as 'illsutrates', 'linewise', 'secong', 'competetion', 'overally', and 'recoarded', which sometimes cause difficulty for the reader. The writer attempts some less common terms related to the visual data, such as 'staff turnover', 'high income bracket', and 'demographic', but these are often mishandled or combined with spelling errors. To achieve a higher band score, the writer needs to expand their lexical repertoire, use words with greater precision regarding collocations and style, and ensure correct spelling and word formation.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response demonstrates a very limited range of sentence structures, relying heavily on simple constructions, and attempts at complex sentences are frequently faulty. There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, including issues with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'Staff turnover considered to be', 'staffs... had showed intrested'), article usage (e.g., 'in the staffs of turnover'), and prepositions. For example, writing 'In the table illsutrates' creates a non-functional sentence structure. Punctuation is also erratic in places. These frequent errors cause considerable strain for the reader. To improve, the writer must work on basic sentence construction, ensure accurate verb forms and tense consistency, and reduce the frequency of grammatical mistakes by checking their work carefully.
