1968 and 2018: average weekly spending by families
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The bar chart illustrates the weekly expenditure of the household income in a particular nation between the year 1968 and 2018.
Overall it is evident that, the majority of a family's spending was on eatables in the year 1968, whereas in the year 2018, the highest expenditure was done on the leisure activities. Moreover, the least amount of income was spent on fuel and power consumption on weekly basis in the year 1968 and 2018 respectively.
To begin with, in the year 1968, the food expenditure accounted for the major proportion of (35%). Furthermore, the housing and apparel were measured at (10%) respectively. Additionally, the rest of the sectors were recorded below (10%).
Subsequently, in the year 2018, leisure activities represented massive growth in the 7 days expenditure of a household and reached the mark of more than (20%). Moreover, the
fuel and power registered for subtle decline, whereas transportation services made up to (12%) of families weekly spending. Finally, the household goods demonstrated neutral proportion over the span of 50 years.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response covers the main features of the chart and makes relevant comparisons between 1968 and 2018. You successfully identified the shift from food to leisure as the primary expenditure. However, the report is somewhat unbalanced; while you mention several categories, the data presentation is occasionally vague (e.g., 'the rest of the sectors were recorded below 10%'). To reach a higher band, ensure you provide more specific data points for all categories mentioned, rather than grouping them too broadly. The overview is clear, but the supporting details could be more precise to fully satisfy the requirements of a Band 7.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The response is logically organized into an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs. You use cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'To begin with', and 'Subsequently' to guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive. The paragraphing is appropriate, and there is a clear progression of ideas from the general overview to specific data points. To improve, try to vary your linking phrases and ensure that the connection between sentences is more fluid rather than relying on standard list-like transitions.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'expenditure', 'proportion', and 'registered'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'eatables' (which is less common in this context than 'food') and 'neutral proportion' (which is slightly confusing when describing a trend). You attempt to use some less common vocabulary, but the precision is occasionally lacking. Expanding your repertoire of reporting verbs and descriptive adjectives for trends would help elevate your score in this criterion.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical slips, such as 'the highest expenditure was done on' (passive voice is slightly awkward here; 'the highest expenditure was on' is better) and 'registered for subtle decline' (should be 'registered a subtle decline'). Punctuation is generally fine, but there is an unnecessary comma after 'evident that'. The errors do not impede communication, but they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher band score.
