Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response attempts to address the task by comparing spending habits in 1968 and 2018. However, the information is presented in a fragmented and often inaccurate manner. While some data points are mentioned, the overall summary lacks a clear overview of the main trends. For example, the description of fuel and power is confusing, and the comparison of categories like 'leisure' is disjointed. The response fails to clearly highlight the most significant changes, such as the dramatic shift in food expenditure versus the rise in leisure spending. The information is often presented as a list of figures rather than a cohesive analysis of the data provided in the chart.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay lacks a logical structure. While there are attempts at paragraphing, the transitions between ideas are abrupt and often confusing, such as the sudden jump to 'Howev' and the list-like nature of the final paragraph. Cohesive devices are used mechanically or incorrectly, such as 'To commence with' and 'moreover on housing', which do not effectively link the sentences. The progression of ideas is difficult to follow, and the referencing is often unclear, making it hard for the reader to identify which year or category is being discussed at any given moment.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is limited and repetitive, often relying on basic terms like 'spending', 'income', and 'percentage'. There are several instances of word-choice errors and awkward phrasing, such as 'comumption of food', 'less intrest on spend money', and 'total spent salary'. The student struggles to use precise terminology to describe trends or data comparisons. While the meaning is generally discernible, the lack of variety and the frequent errors in collocation and spelling (e.g., 'Footwer', 'expenes') significantly limit the ability to convey information with precision.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response contains frequent grammatical errors that often impede communication. There are significant issues with sentence structure, subject-verb agreement, and article usage (e.g., 'a families was spending', 'the other expenes was leisure'). The attempt to use complex structures is largely unsuccessful, resulting in run-on sentences or fragments. Punctuation is also inconsistent, with missing commas and periods, which further disrupts the flow of the text. The majority of sentences contain errors, and the range of structures is very limited, relying mostly on simple, poorly constructed clauses.
