Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response attempts to address the task but fails to provide a clear or accurate summary of the data. While it identifies some categories, the description of the trends is confusing and often inaccurate (e.g., stating housing rates were 'down in 1968' when the chart shows the opposite). The overview is poorly developed and lacks a clear synthesis of the main features. The information is presented in a fragmented way, making it difficult for the reader to grasp the overall changes between 1968 and 2018. To improve, you must focus on identifying the most significant trends—such as the dramatic shift in food and leisure spending—rather than listing individual data points in a disjointed manner.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay lacks logical organization and progression. The paragraphs are not clearly structured, and the transition between ideas is abrupt. Cohesive devices are either missing or used incorrectly, such as the repetitive use of 'on the other hand' and 'as well as'. The lack of proper sentence structure and paragraphing makes the text difficult to follow. To improve, you should group related information together (e.g., categories that increased vs. those that decreased) and use linking words like 'whereas', 'in contrast', or 'subsequently' to guide the reader through your comparison of the two years.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is very limited and often inaccurate. Phrases like 'food rate or peak point' and 'difference points' are imprecise and do not reflect the academic tone required for Task 1. There is significant repetition of basic words, and the misuse of terminology (e.g., 'passing year' instead of 'time period') hinders clarity. You need to expand your range of vocabulary to include terms related to data analysis, such as 'expenditure', 'proportion', 'fluctuated', 'remained stable', and 'accounted for'. Focusing on precise collocations will help you convey information more effectively.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response contains frequent grammatical errors that impede communication. There are issues with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'the bar graph show'), incorrect verb tenses, and missing articles. Sentence structures are mostly simple and often incomplete or run-on, such as 'In the leisure is two different year are various and they is a huge difference'. The lack of punctuation and capitalization further complicates the reading. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction, ensuring every sentence has a clear subject and verb, and proofreading for common errors like pluralization and tense consistency.
