1968 and 2018: average weekly spending by families

Student answer (Band 7.5)

Introduction

The bar chart compares the proportion of average weekly household income spent on eight different categories by families in one country in 1968 and 2018.

Overview

Overall, spending patterns changed considerably over the 50-year period. The proportion of income spent on food decreased dramatically, while expenditure on housing, transport, and leisure increased. Most of the remaining categories accounted for a smaller share of weekly spending in 2018 than in 1968.

In 1968, food represented by far the largest household expense, accounting for approximately 35% of weekly income. By 2018, this figure had fallen sharply to around 17%. Spending on clothing and footwear also declined significantly, dropping from about 10% to roughly 5%. Similarly, expenditure on fuel and power decreased from approximately 6% to 4%, while spending on personal goods fell from around 8% to 4%. Household goods also experienced a slight decline, from about 8% to 6%.

By contrast, several categories became more important in 2018. Housing expenditure almost doubled, rising from around 10% to nearly 19% of weekly income. Transport also saw a considerable increase, climbing from approximately 8% to 14%. The most notable rise was in leisure spending, which grew from about 9% in 1968 to approximately 22% in 2018, making it the largest category of household expenditure in that year.
