Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response attempts to address the task but fails to provide a clear, accurate summary of the data. While it identifies food as a major expense, it lacks specific data points or comparisons between 1968 and 2018. The analysis is heavily reliant on personal speculation (e.g., 'one person is earn and many family members are not earning') rather than reporting the provided chart information. The overview is missing, and the response fails to highlight the most significant trends, such as the dramatic decrease in food spending or the rise in leisure and housing costs. Consequently, the response does not meet the requirements for a clear, data-driven summary.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is organised into paragraphs, but the logical progression is weak. The introduction is poorly phrased, and the transition between ideas is often abrupt or confusing. Cohesive devices are used in a mechanical and sometimes inaccurate way, such as 'In Summaries' to start the final paragraph. Referencing is often unclear, and the lack of clear topic sentences makes it difficult for the reader to follow the intended argument. The overall structure lacks the cohesion expected at higher bands, as the information is presented in a disjointed manner rather than as a coherent report.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is limited and often imprecise. There are frequent errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'utilize the weekly income' instead of 'spend their weekly income' and 'main seven things to utilize' instead of 'seven main categories of expenditure'. The student struggles to use academic terminology appropriate for a data description task. While the meaning is generally understandable, the range of vocabulary is insufficient to convey the information with precision, and the persistent errors in word formation and usage significantly impact the quality of the writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains frequent grammatical errors that impede readability. There are persistent issues with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'This Diagram Illustrate', 'food expenses is more'), tense usage (e.g., 'expenses are expand'), and sentence structure. Many sentences are fragmented or poorly constructed, such as 'Another factors which are discussed with this chart having same frequency is housing'. The range of structures is limited, and the errors are frequent enough to cause difficulty for the reader. There is little evidence of complex sentence control, and basic punctuation and capitalization errors are common throughout the text.
