Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The student attempts to address the task by comparing the weekly spending of families in 1968 and 2018. An overview is provided, noting the significant shift in spending on food and leisure. However, the response struggles with data accuracy and interpretation. For example, the student writes that 'thirty five percent of the fouth part of monthly income spent on food' and mentions confusing fractional proportions ('seven proportion of it', 'sevent percent'). While major trends are identified, such as the drop in food expenditure and the rise in leisure and housing, the details contain numerous misreadings and imprecise figures. Overall, the response addresses the prompt but suffers from developmental and numerical inaccuracies, aligning with Band 5.5 descriptors.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The essay is divided into four paragraphs, showing an attempt at a conventional structure (introduction, overview, and two body paragraphs). However, logical progression is frequently hindered by clumsy transitions and confusing phrasing, such as 'While on the other hand in 2018, the graphs has significantly changed'. Cohesive devices are used awkwardly or repetitively ('In 1968... In 1968... In 2018... In 2018'). Paragraphing is present, but the internal organization of the body paragraphs lacks clear signposting and smooth flow, resulting in an overall score of 5.0 for coherence and cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is basic and heavily restricted, with frequent lexical errors and inappropriate word choices. Examples include 'eating items' instead of food, 'weekhly money', 'residential sites' instead of housing, 'dressing' instead of clothing, and 'mervellous horizontal of the line of graph'. There are also spelling mistakes throughout ('fouth', 'theire', 'mervellous', 'leaisure'). The range is minimally adequate to convey a basic message, but the frequent inaccuracies and lack of precision restrict the lexical score to 5.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but control over grammar is weak. There are frequent grammatical errors, incorrect prepositions, and awkward syntax, such as 'most of the income used on eating items' (missing passive auxiliary) and 'people done on transport areas as well'. Punctuation is basic, and sentence boundaries are sometimes blurred by run-on structures. Because errors are frequent and occasionally impede smooth reading, the grammar score is assessed at 5.0.
