Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response attempts to address the prompt by reporting data from the bar chart regarding family spending in 1968 and 2018. However, the performance is limited because the information presented contains several inaccuracies and confusion regarding the figures and trends. For instance, the student states that the spending on food fell down by 17% in 2018, whereas the chart shows it fell from 35% to 17%. Furthermore, data is sometimes reversed or incorrectly attributed, such as the mention of housing and transport figures. The overview at the end is incomplete, trailing off mid-sentence ('lesiu'). While some main features are touched upon, the lack of accurate data reporting and the partial, disjointed presentation keep the response at a minimal level of task fulfillment.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
The text is organized into paragraphs with basic attempts at transitions, such as 'To commence with', 'Moving further', and 'Overall'. However, the logical progression is frequently disrupted by confusing statements and mechanical referencing. Cohesive devices are used awkwardly or inaccurately, and the links between sentences often fail to establish clear relationships between the data points. Paragraphing is attempted, but the internal structure of the paragraphs lacks a clear flow of ideas. Pronoun referencing and time markers are poorly handled, making it difficult for the reader to follow the comparisons smoothly, which places the organization at a basic and disconnected level.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, with noticeable errors in word choice and word formation that occasionally impede communication. Examples of lexical slips and awkward collocations include 'weekly which families spent', 'delined' (declined), 'percentile' used instead of percentage, 'sytem', and 'om' instead of on. The range of vocabulary is limited, relying heavily on simple terms and struggling to accurately incorporate less common or task-specific vocabulary such as economic or statistical terms. Spelling errors and incorrect word forms occur throughout the text, reflecting a restricted control of lexical features.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The grammatical structures are very limited, consisting mostly of simple and attempted complex sentences that frequently contain errors. There are frequent issues with verb forms, tense consistency, and missing prepositions within grammatical patterns, such as in 'money spent on clothing and footwear which was around 10% and 55% in 1968 and 2018' and 'families spend their 17% and 8% of money on transport sytem to commute place to place'. Punctuation is also problematic, with erratic spacing around commas and incomplete sentences trailing off. These persistent errors in grammar and sentence construction cause frequent difficulty for the reader and restrict the grammatical range.
