IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The chart below gives information about how families in one country spent their weekly income in 1968 and in 2018.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
1968 and 2018: average weekly spending by families
Student answer (Band 5.0)
In the graph given below we have to make a comparison between average weekly spending by families now while summarizing the graph we can see clearly that in 1968 most of the food was used as compared to the time in 2018 in my opinion the main reason for that was in that period there were no luxuries or power while in modern age we can see plenty of new things and accessories on which people love to spend. Now when we talk about housing in 2018 the total expense in building houses has increased compared to the houing or building in 1968 the main reason could be people at that time were simple and did not spend alot on housing.
when we talk about fuel and power the main running cost was in 1968 not in 2018 because of the older techniques it used more power and fuel.
Clothing and footware yes more money was spend on it in 1968 than 2018 because of the simple household and hobbies of the people at that time.
Household goods almost same amount was spend by people in both times.
On Personal goods in 1968 more amount was spend compared to the people in 2018.
Transport was more commonly used in 2018 then 1968.
As for leasure activities everyone spend more in the coming years then in 1968.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response makes an attempt to address the task by comparing weekly spending in 1968 and 2018, noting differences for categories such as food, housing, and leisure. However, the evaluation is only partial and underdeveloped because the student includes a large amount of irrelevant personal opinion and speculation about the causes of the trends, rather than focusing purely on reporting and comparing the data. While some key features are mentioned, the overall overview is missing, and the student fails to present a clear, objective summary of the chart as required in an academic task.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
The text lacks clear overall progression and organization. Instead of using standard paragraphing to structure the report into an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs, the student writes a single disjointed block or broken, list-like sentences without proper cohesive devices. Transitions between categories are abrupt and mechanical, relying on repetitive phrases like "when we talk about" and "on personal goods in 1968". Pronoun referencing is also weak, making it difficult to follow the logical relationship between the ideas and the visual data being discussed.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
Vocabulary use is limited and minimally adequate for the task, with frequent inappropriate word choices and repetitive phrasing. Words like "leasure" contain spelling errors, and expressions such as "most of the food was used" or "total expense in building houses" demonstrate weak collocations and imprecise terminology. The student struggles to use precise language related to statistical data, relying on basic terms like "more amount" or "same amount" rather than employing appropriate academic vocabulary such as proportion, expenditure, or percentage.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response displays a very limited range of sentence structures, consisting mostly of run-on simple sentences or faulty complex attempts. Frequent grammatical errors are present, including run-on sentences with missing punctuation ("Transport was more commonly used in 2018 then 1968"), incorrect prepositions, and agreement issues. These errors cause noticeable difficulty for the reader and impede smooth communication, reflecting poor control over basic and complex grammatical patterns alike.
