Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

The response responds to the task only minimally and tangentially. While the student identifies a few categories such as food, housing, fuel and power, and leisure, the information provided is frequently inaccurate or confused. For instance, the text claims that people spent 'too much time on different types of fast food' instead of discussing financial expenditure on food. Furthermore, several data points are misreported or fail to make meaningful comparisons between 1968 and 2018, such as the statement that personal goods 'didn't used in 2018' when the chart shows a figure of 4%. The overall overview is missing, and the ideas are undeveloped, leading to a minimal handling of the prompt.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0

Information and ideas are not arranged coherently in this response. The text is broken into short, disconnected paragraphs that lack a clear overall progression or logical sequence. There is no introduction that properly frames the chart, and the body paragraphs jump between different categories without a cohesive thread. While some basic linking words like 'while' and 'however' are attempted, referencing is frequently unclear, such as in the sentence 'the leisure time spent was around in the periods 1968 and 2018 were top and bottom.' Paragraphing is disjointed, and the lack of a clear organizational structure makes the response difficult to follow from beginning to end.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, employing a very limited range of words that are frequently inappropriate for an academic task. Terms are misused or confused, such as writing 'spent time' instead of 'spent money' or 'income', and referring to financial expenditure on food as 'fast food'. There are noticeable word choice and collocation errors throughout the text, including 'personal good consumers' and 'fuel and power was extremely decreased'. These lexical inadequacies and inaccuracies strain the reader and impede clear communication, restricting the score to a basic level.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response displays a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying on simple sentences that often contain frequent errors which distort meaning. There are persistent issues with verb forms and tenses, such as 'didn't used' instead of 'were not used' or 'dropped', and missing auxiliary verbs or incorrect copular verbs, as seen in 'it around 7% in 1968'. Prepositions and word patterns are frequently awkward or incorrect, and awkward phrasing causes structural confusion throughout the text. These frequent grammatical errors make many sentences difficult to parse and understand.
