Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response attempts to address the prompt by discussing the provided chart on family spending in 1968 and 2018, but it does so only partially. While it touches upon several categories such as food, housing, and leisure, the information is frequently inaccurate or confused. For instance, the student states that food 'highly rise' in 1968 and decreased in 2018, which misinterprets the data showing food was actually the highest expenditure in 1968 (35%) and dropped significantly in 2018. Furthermore, the overview is extremely weak and unclear, ending with a confusing concluding sentence that fails to synthesize the main trends. To reach a higher level, the response needs to accurately report the data without misinterpretations, select key features effectively, and provide a clear, coherent overview of the main trends shown in the chart.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The organisation of the text is basic and lacks clear overall progression. The student attempts to structure the response using sequencing markers such as 'At first', 'Secondly', and 'Thirdly', but these devices are applied mechanically and inappropriately to introduce disparate data points rather than logical paragraphs of related information. Paragraphing is poorly handled, with a series of fragmented, single-sentence paragraphs that hinder the flow of the text. Additionally, referencing is often unclear, leaving the reader confused about which data categories are being compared. To improve coherence and cohesion, the response should group related categories logically into well-defined paragraphs, use cohesive devices more naturally, and ensure that the progression of ideas from the introduction to the body and conclusion is smooth and logical.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

The lexical resource is limited and inadequate for a fully communicative academic response. The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, with frequent word choice and word formation errors, such as writing 'icome', 'decresed', 'eaqually', 'gradullay', and 'usehold'. The student struggles with appropriate collocations and terminology related to graphical data, incorrectly using phrases like 'housing thing percentage' and 'Familyweekly usefull'. These lexical inaccuracies and non-standard word forms often impede communication and strain the reader's understanding. To achieve a higher band, the writer must expand their vocabulary range, learn correct word forms and spellings, and use precise, topic-specific terminology to discuss percentages, trends, and data comparisons naturally and accurately.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The grammatical range is extremely limited, relying mostly on simple or faulty sentence structures. Throughout the text, there are frequent and intrusive grammatical errors, including severe issues with verb forms and tenses (e.g., 'which are highly rise', 'the housing thing percentage... were much lower'), missing articles, incorrect prepositions, and faulty subject-verb agreement. Complex sentence attempts invariably contain significant structural errors that disrupt meaning and cause difficulty for the reader. Punctuation is also poorly handled, with missing spaces after commas and run-on structures. To progress, the writer needs to improve basic sentence construction, ensure correct tense usage when describing past data, and eliminate frequent errors in agreement and word structure.
