Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
The response fails to meet the minimum length requirement of 150 words, containing only 138 words overall. Furthermore, the content reflects a minimal and tangential engagement with the task. The student misidentifies the visual aid as a line chart rather than a bar chart and spends a significant portion of the text describing the visual formatting, such as the colors used, rather than the data itself. While some features are mentioned, such as food being the highest in 1968 and leisure in 2018, the reporting is incomplete, disjointed, and contains inaccurate data interpretations, such as stating fuel and power was around seven percent in 1968 when it was six percent, and miscalculating housing figures for 2018. Consequently, the response only minimally addresses the prompt.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response displays some organization with basic paragraph breaks, but there is no clear overall progression or logical flow. Cohesive devices are used awkwardly or inaccurately, such as starting paragraphs with 'Firstly,' and 'On the other hand,' without proper contextual connection. Referencing is frequently unclear, and sentences are often disjointed, making it difficult for the reader to follow a coherent line of thought. To improve, the student needs to use logical connectors more naturally, group related information into cohesive paragraphs, and ensure that each sentence logically follows the previous one to build a clear overview and comparison.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, relying heavily on words directly copied from the prompt or simple descriptors. There are numerous word choice and word form errors throughout the text, such as 'more in formation', 'cloth and footware', and 'in addation'. These lexical inaccuracies, combined with awkward phrasing like 'second largest value name is Housing increase 15%', strain the reader and obscure meaning. To achieve a higher band, the writer must expand their lexical repertoire, incorporate less common vocabulary related to data trends and proportions, and ensure accurate word forms and spelling.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The grammatical range is very limited, consisting mostly of simple sentences and faulty attempts at more complex structures. There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the response, including missing or incorrect articles, improper verb forms, tense confusion ('1968 has shows black colour'), and severe punctuation errors. For example, sentences frequently fragment or lack proper predication, such as 'As well as housing and clothing and footware both was same percentage 10 percent.' These frequent errors significantly impede communication and distort meaning, placing the grammatical performance firmly at a lower level.
