Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses the task partially by attempting to summarise the main features of the chart, such as food expenditure in 1968 and housing in 2018. However, the selection of data is somewhat haphazard, and the overview is vague and poorly articulated, stating that 'food is one of the highest amount where the members spend their lots of money.' Furthermore, some interpretations of the data are confused or inaccurate, such as claiming that fuel and power is 'just need for the car or bike in the early year' and asserting that clothing and footwear was 'at the top' in 1968. Ideas are limited and under-developed, lacking a clear and comprehensive comparison across the two years to reach a higher level.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
There is some basic organisation with paragraphs attempting to separate different categories of spending, but the response lacks a clear overall progression. Cohesive devices are frequently inadequate, inaccurate, or repetitive, as seen in awkward transitions like 'Seeing the fuel and power' and 'On the year first'. Paragraphing is also misused, with ideas and sentences arbitrarily broken up rather than logically grouped around central themes. Referencing can be confusing, making it difficult for the reader to follow the logical development of ideas from one sentence to the next.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and repetitive, demonstrating a minimally adequate range for the task. There are noticeable lexical errors and inappropriate word choices that cause some difficulty for the reader, such as using 'invest a lot of money by 35 percentages', 'expend' instead of expenditure, and describing transport as being 'in the hype'. Word formations and collocations are often awkward, reflecting an insufficient control of less common lexical items and impeding precise communication of statistical data.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response features a very limited range of sentence structures, relying heavily on simple constructions. Attempts at complex sentences are frequently faulty, leading to ungrammatical phrasing such as 'The second highest is that the housing which was very low in the year first but by the year increase it gives the positive results'. There are frequent errors in grammar, verb forms, prepositions, and articles—such as 'in 1968 while in the year 2018 by 17 percentages' and 'The most family start'—which cause noticeable strain and difficulty for the reader.
