Student answer (Band 7.0)

Because of the development of technology and globalization, it is easier for people to communicate despite the limitations of geography. While some may experience cultural shock or feel unfair, the merits of globalization still outweigh its downsides as people are more likely to make informed decisions.

First and foremost, we need to admitted that there are some negative impacts on people's everyday life because of various social media. To illustrate this: nowadays, individuals tend to compare their ordinary lives with others' polished lives posted online, making themselves feel jealous and unfair, unlike people in the past who did not have access to the internet and therefore could be more present. In addition, while the ease of international travel enables more people to experience other cultures, it is inevitable for travelers to experience cultural shock, which may make some people experience existential crisis.

Nevertheless, we must to take into account that due to the internet and globalization, the general public is growing rapidly. After travelling to other countries, people usually become more empathetic, being able to consider others' feelings while making an decision. Moreover, there are more accessible resources online, which provide individuals with chances to improve their skill sets. On YouTube, for instance, learners can access a variety of educational channels, such as how to play guitar or how to start a business. For these reasons, the likelihood for people to make wise decisions is increasing.

In conclusion, while some people may have unpleasant experience caused by globalization such as feeling unfair and cultural shock, more people benefit from this worldwide trend as they can learn from others and attend online courses. Thus, I would argue that the advantages of this development outweigh the disadvantages.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, providing a clear position that the advantages outweigh the disadvantages. The ideas are relevant, such as the psychological impact of social media and the educational benefits of the internet. However, the development is somewhat uneven. The discussion on 'cultural shock' and 'existential crisis' is a bit vague and could have been better supported with concrete examples. Similarly, the link between travel and empathy is asserted but not fully explored. To reach a higher band, ensure that each point is supported by more detailed evidence or specific reasoning to fully develop the argument.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the disadvantages from the advantages. Cohesive devices such as 'First and foremost', 'In addition', 'Nevertheless', and 'Moreover' are used to guide the reader through the argument. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and there is occasional awkwardness in the flow of ideas, such as the transition between the discussion of social media and international travel in the second paragraph. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The range of vocabulary is adequate for the task. You use some good collocations like 'informed decisions', 'existential crisis', and 'polished lives'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and phrasing, such as 'we need to admitted' (should be 'admit') and 'feel unfair' (which is not a standard collocation; 'feel inadequate' or 'experience feelings of inadequacy' would be more precise). The vocabulary is generally sufficient to convey your meaning, but more precise and varied lexical choices would elevate the response to a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. For instance, 'we must to take into account' (should be 'we must take into account'), 'making an decision' (should be 'making a decision'), and 'unpleasant experience' (should be plural 'experiences'). These errors are frequent enough to be noticeable but do not significantly impede communication. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement, article usage, and ensuring that modal verbs are followed by the correct verb form.
