Student answer (Band 7.0)

In the modern world, with rapid advancement in science and technology, international travel is ever so accessible. Additionally, with the rise in the use of the internet, citizens' lifestyles and living conditions have become easier to access through travel and mass media. The merits of such progress include improved awareness of living conditions in different geographical areas. Whereas the demerits of such progress may include the importation of immoral traditions.

On the one hand, the internet and international travel make it easier to access the living conditions of people in every corner of the world. The curiosity that most people had about the living techniques of other citizens gets satisfied to an extent. The techniques of surviving the tall mountains of Tibet, the dry conditions of the Sahara, the freezing temperatures of Serbia, etc can be learned by the curious public. For instance, the nomadic living style of Mongolians can now be easily witnessed through mass media or a flight to Mongolia.

On the other hand, international travel and easy access to mass media can also result in the importation of wrong and immoral traditions of that nation. Such progress does not only have a bright side but may also include negative aspects. Some nations have different traditions and different levels of restrictions on some activities. For example, the lack of proper control and restrictions on drug use in some South American nations can influence foreign citizens to import that aspect of the nation.

To conclude, I believe that the rapid development in international travel and spread of various kinds of mass media over the globe, though they have some negative aspects, the advantages of such progress outweigh the disadvantages.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The essay addresses all parts of the prompt and maintains a clear position throughout. You have identified both advantages and disadvantages and provided a conclusion that confirms your stance. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the example regarding 'drug use in South American nations' is a bit of a generalization and lacks depth. To reach a higher band, ensure that your supporting arguments are more nuanced and fully explored. The response is well-structured and directly answers the question, demonstrating a clear understanding of the task requirements.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use transition signals such as 'On the one hand' and 'On the other hand' effectively to guide the reader. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. However, the flow between some sentences could be smoother; occasionally, the transition between the general topic and the specific example feels slightly mechanical. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear, and the use of cohesive devices is sufficient to maintain a coherent argument throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'geographical areas,' 'immoral traditions,' and 'rapid advancement.' There are some instances where word choice could be more precise, such as 'living techniques' or 'importation of wrong and immoral traditions,' which sound slightly unnatural in this context. While you attempt to use less common vocabulary, the precision is inconsistent. To improve, focus on collocations and using words that fit the academic tone more naturally. Communication is never impeded by your lexical choices.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some minor grammatical slips, such as 'the tall mountains of Tibet' (which could be phrased more naturally as 'the mountainous terrain of Tibet') and the slightly awkward phrasing in the final sentence: 'though they have some negative aspects, the advantages... outweigh the disadvantages.' Despite these errors, your meaning is always clear, and the punctuation is generally accurate. You have demonstrated a sufficient range of structures to convey your points effectively, though more variety in complex sentence forms would be beneficial.
