Student answer (Band 6.0)

Nowadays, cheap international flights and the spread of different kinds of social media all around the world have made it more possible than ever for people to get updated how other people live in other countries. In my opinion, the advantages outweigh the disadvantages.

As the humans develops with time, the technology made it really easy for everyone to get updated internationally.

This development has several advantages. By use of the international travelling and social media, people learn about different culture, tradition and lifestyles. It also reduces stereotypes and misunderstandings among new people. People learn tolerance and respect through it. In addition, it also help exposure of students to international opportunities. People get exposed to new ideas and way of thinking. Travel allows direct experience of other cultures. For example, students can learn about foreign cultures through documentaries/social media and later experience them while travelling.

On the other hand, this also can have some disadvantages. By doing so, people may copy foreign lifestyles leading to loss of culture. Similarly, traditional clothes and food may became less popular. Another disadvantage is that social media often shows an idealized version of life abroad, and by this, people may become dissatisfied with their own lifestyle/country. For example, young people may imitate lifestyles promoted by foreign influencers without understanding the cultural context.

In conclusion, international travel and easy access to social media may have some negative effects on the local culture. However, greater cultural awareness, knowledge and understanding are more significant benefits. Therefore, advantages outweigh disadvantages.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, providing a clear position that the advantages outweigh the disadvantages. The ideas are relevant, such as cultural exchange and the reduction of stereotypes, balanced against the loss of local culture and unrealistic expectations from social media. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat superficial. For example, the point about 'exposure of students to international opportunities' is mentioned but not expanded upon with specific detail. To reach a higher band, you should aim to provide more depth in your supporting evidence rather than listing several points briefly. The conclusion effectively summarises your stance, ensuring the position remains consistent throughout the essay.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organised with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'In addition', 'On the other hand', and 'Therefore' to link your thoughts. While these are effective, the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of cohesive markers and ensuring that referencing is more precise. For instance, the transition between the second and third paragraphs is functional but could be more sophisticated to better connect the contrasting arguments.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'stereotypes', 'cultural context', and 'idealized version'. However, there are some instances of slightly unnatural phrasing, such as 'get updated how other people live' and 'help exposure of students'. These minor inaccuracies do not impede communication, but they prevent the essay from reaching a higher band. To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and academic vocabulary. For example, instead of 'get updated', consider 'gain insight into'. Expanding your range to include more topic-specific, less common lexical items would also be beneficial.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you attempt complex sentences, there are several grammatical errors present, such as 'As the humans develops' (subject-verb agreement) and 'food may became less popular' (incorrect verb tense). Additionally, there are minor punctuation and article usage errors throughout the text. While these errors do not cause difficulty for the reader, they are frequent enough to limit the score. To improve, pay closer attention to subject-verb agreement and verb forms when using modal verbs. Focusing on proofreading for these small, repetitive errors will help increase your accuracy.
