The ease of international travel and the spread of various kinds of mass media all over the world have made it more possible than ever for people to know how other people live in other countries.

Do the advantages of this development outweigh the disadvantages?

You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence. Write at least 250 words.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The widespread use of social media and accessible foreign trips have helped people to know the lifestyles and living patterns of other people across the globe. I firmly contend that this development has more advantages which can outweigh any potential disadvantage.

Regarding advantages, the advancement in technology has led people access to social media anywhere anytime. Social media is a platform to exhange ideas, exhibit lifestyle through daily vlogs and post snaps of daily routine. Due to this, people inetract with each other, learn different cultures, and know the lifestyles of individuals from other countries. Likewise, it has become easier for the people to travel abroad owing to the availablity of disposable income and easy access to loans. Hence, people experience different lifestyles firsthand. Eventually, it will help them to take the decision of moving abroad without feeling isolated and lack of belonging.

Conversely, the accessiblity to other cultures can possess certain drawbacks. When people exposed to different cultures, whether through social media or personal visits, they tend to integrate different cultures together. This leads to the loss of identity of original cultures. For instance, when people learn different cusines from across the world, they try to replicate according to their own tastebuds. As a result, the recipe loose its original taste and identity.

In conclusion, people are exposed to various cultures globally due to advancement in technology particularly social media and ease of travel abroad. Although, there are certain drawbacks of continous exposure in terms of culture integration, I hold the position that its advantages certainly outweigh the disadvantages.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt and maintains a clear position throughout. The arguments regarding the benefits of cultural exchange and the drawbacks of cultural dilution are relevant. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the point about 'loss of identity' is introduced but not fully explored with sufficient depth or nuanced examples. The essay would benefit from more detailed explanations of how these developments impact society on a broader scale. While the position is clear, the supporting evidence is somewhat generic, which prevents the response from reaching a higher band.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'Regarding advantages', 'Conversely', and 'In conclusion' are used to guide the reader through the argument. However, the use of these devices is occasionally mechanical, and there are some minor issues with referencing and flow. For example, the transition between the benefits of social media and the ease of travel could be smoother. Paragraphing is used appropriately, and the progression of ideas is generally easy to follow, though the connection between the final point in the second paragraph and the conclusion could be more tightly integrated.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'disposable income' and 'cultural integration'. However, there are several instances of imprecise word choice and minor errors, such as 'exhange' (spelling), 'inetract' (spelling), 'accessiblity' (spelling), and 'loose' instead of 'lose'. These errors do not impede communication, but they do indicate a lack of precision. To reach a higher band, the student should focus on more accurate word choices and ensure consistent spelling of key terms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors throughout the text. Examples include 'led people access' (should be 'led people to access'), 'lack of belonging' (should be 'a lack of belonging'), and 'When people exposed' (should be 'When people are exposed'). Additionally, there are minor punctuation and article usage errors. While the errors do not prevent the reader from understanding the argument, they occur frequently enough to limit the score. The student should focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of passive voice constructions.
