IELTS Writing Task 2 question
The ease of international travel and the spread of various kinds of mass media all over the world have made it more possible than ever for people to know how other people live in other countries.
Do the advantages of this development outweigh the disadvantages?
You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence. Write at least 250 words.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
As international travel and various types of mass media (especially the internet) has become very easily accessible nowadays, it has become possible for the people of one country to know about the lifestyles of individuals in other nations. According to me, the advantages of this phenomenon like upgradation of lifestyle and rising international trade fairly outweighs its mere disadvantage of public manipulation.
One of the main advantages of rising cross-cultural exchange between countries has resulted in increasing public exposure to diffrent cultures and customs. Hence, increasing number of people are trying to upgrade their lifestyles in a positive way by adopting more noble ways of doing various activities. Rising trend of spirituality across the world, for instance, is a result of spread of social media content from various indian influencers and news channels in other countries. Moreover, as people can watch other citizens using various products that are convenient in daily life, an international demand for an economy's local goods also rises. For example, sales of rolex watches from switzerland climbed tremendously after people from different countries started watching their marketig campaign on Instagram.
One of the few disadvantages of this intercultural exchange is the pubic manipulation that one government can do in other nations. To elaborate, one nation can easily influence the public perception in other countries through various mediums. To illustrate, a popular chinese app named tiktok was completely banned from india when it was found that it is manipulating indian citizens to become anti-nationals.
To conclude, I believe that the advantages of this inter-country exchange of lifestyle like international trade, clearly overrides its disadvantages of public manipulation which can be easily managed with the help of various regulatory activities of the government.

| Criterion | Band |
|---|---|

| Lexical Resource | 6.0 |
| Grammatical Range and Accuracy | 6.0 |
| Overall | 6.5 |
Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both the advantages and disadvantages of international travel and mass media, clearly presenting a position that the advantages outweigh the disadvantages. Ideas are extended and supported with relevant examples, such as the spread of spirituality through Indian social media influencers and the international demand for Swiss watches like Rolex. However, there is a tendency to over-generalise in parts, such as the claim regarding TikTok and India, which slightly affects the depth of task development. Overall, the prompt is successfully answered and the main arguments are well-supported, aligning closely with the Band 7 requirements for Task Achievement.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay presents a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. It is well-structured into a clear introduction, two body paragraphs exploring the advantages and disadvantages respectively, and a concise conclusion. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well to connect ideas, such as 'One of the main advantages', 'Moreover', and 'To elaborate'. However, paragraphing and referencing can occasionally feel slightly mechanical, and minor mechanical errors like the lowercase 'i' in 'indian' and 'chinese' reduce the overall polished feel. Nevertheless, the progression of ideas is easy to follow, justifying a Band 6.5 or a solid Band 7 for coherence.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'upgradation', 'cross-cultural exchange', and 'public manipulation'. However, there are noticeable inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and spelling throughout the text. For instance, 'upgradation' is non-standard in this context (upgrade or improvement is preferred), 'diffrent' is misspelled, and 'marketig' contains a typo. Furthermore, phrases like 'according to me' are informal. While communication is never impeded, these lexical inaccuracies prevent the response from achieving a higher band, placing it firmly at Band 6.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including relative clauses and conditional structures. However, there are several grammatical errors and punctuation slips. For example, the opening sentence contains a subject-verb agreement error: 'As international travel and various types of mass media... has become', which should be 'have become'. Additionally, capitalization errors are present ('indian', 'tiktok', 'switzerland', 'rolex'). While complex structures are attempted with varying success, the frequency of grammatical and mechanical errors means the response falls into the Band 6 category where errors are noticeable but do not impede communication.
