IELTS Writing Task 2 question

The ease of international travel and the spread of various kinds of mass media all over the world have made it more possible than ever for people to know how other people live in other countries.

Do the advantages of this development outweigh the disadvantages?

You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence. Write at least 250 words.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Now-a-days, traveling across countries has become easier owing to advancements and digitalization in this sector. This fact along with the widespread of various social media platforms have allowed travelers to learn about the lifestyles of the foreigners. In my opinion, this provides more advantages than the disadvantages it causes.

By wandering in other countries, people get to know about the local people of different countries. For example, by visiting Bali in Indonesia, one can observe the lifestyles of the coastal people living there. Again, consuming diverse contents on mass media viewers get to know the tradition of other countries. For instance, by watching a vlogging video of a foreigner on Facebook, a person gains knowledge on how the citizens of that particular country spend their daily life.

However, sometimes individuals may like specific activities or trends of people living in abroad. Even they may adapt those lifestyles to satisfy their curiosity. This practice is not that problematic until it bypasses a threshold. Because, excessive adaptation of foreign cultures may lead the people to overlook their own ones. In fact, this may lead to extinction of a local culture or activity. To illustrate, in order to dress like British people the people of Bangladesh may ignore wearing their traditional clothes on a regular basis. But they will never give up dressing in traditional outfits. Because, on the occasions of local festivals natives prefer to put on conventional outfits.

Exploring foreign people widens our span of general knowledge. It also generates feeling of solidarity and friendship among diverse nationals. Although it sometimes poses a threat for the local cultures, moslty, they are

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The student addresses all parts of the task, discussing both the advantages (gaining general knowledge, solidarity, understanding other lifestyles) and the disadvantages (overlooking local cultures, risk of extinction), and clearly states a position in the introduction that the advantages outweigh the disadvantages. Ideas are generally extended and supported with examples, such as visiting Bali or watching Facebook vlogging videos. However, the conclusion is abruptly cut off at the end ("moslty, they are"), which prevents the final thought from being fully realised. Despite this minor truncation, the core prompt is thoroughly engaged with, warranting a solid Band 6.5 or 7.0 for fully covering all parts and presenting a clear position throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response features a coherent overall arrangement with logical progression from introduction to body paragraphs discussing advantages and disadvantages. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas, such as travel benefits versus cultural threats. Cohesive devices like 'For example', 'However', 'To illustrate', and 'Although' are employed to connect ideas, though some referencing and transitions feel slightly mechanical. For instance, the transition 'Again, consuming diverse contents...' is a bit awkward. Furthermore, the lack of a complete concluding paragraph slightly disrupts the overall structural flow. Overall, the organization is clear and logical, comfortably meeting the requirements for a Band 6.5.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'digitalization', 'widespread', 'curiosity', 'threshold', and 'conventional'. However, there are some noticeable inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For instance, writing 'living in abroad' instead of 'abroad' or 'living abroad', using 'diverse contents' (content is generally uncountable here), and referring to 'foreign people' instead of 'foreign cultures' or 'foreign societies'. Despite these errors, meaning is rarely impeded, and the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended message, aligning well with the Band 6.0 descriptors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating conditional ideas and subordinate clauses successfully (e.g., 'This practice is not that problematic until it bypasses a threshold.'). There are, however, several grammatical errors and awkward phrasings present, such as 'Now-a-days' (spelled as one word or two without hyphens), 'the widespread of various social media platforms' (should be 'widespread use' or 'widespread nature'), and 'lead the people to overlook their own ones'. Punctuation is generally acceptable, though commas are occasionally misused. Because complex structures are attempted and communication is not impeded by the errors, the writing fits comfortably into the Band 6.0 category.
