Student answer (Band 6.0)

People have an easy access today to cross border cultures and lifestyles due to convenieant travel and mass media. Such accultration is significant to allievate xenophobia and build joint commercial networks. On the contrary, it may also lead to dangers of mass immigration and a new digital wave of colonisation.

It is an undeniable fact that hatred towards other cultures and people is borne of no or little knowledge regarding that particular region. As the influx of people travelling across lands increases, they learn about each other more that shall lead to mutual respect. For instance, no considerable knowledge of the foreign lands and cultures caused the notorious orientalist mindset of Europeans against non Europeans. Once they got to know the ground realities, the mutual experiences turned widely amiable.

The coetrie amongst people from varied regions also holds commercial benefits. The concept of multinational companies and the over the night progress of dropshipping platforms like Alibaba, amazon and ebay would not have been possible if the efficiency of global travel and mass media was still questionable.

Nevertheless, the cheap travel and media loaded with selling dreams of foreign lands have caused one of the most cumbersome social issues of mass immigration today. As it is not just a migration of an individual rather it brings a culture, a mentality and in worst case scenario, diseases native to the migrant's land. The easy travel was the major cause of spread of Covid-19 and currently statistics clearly state that highest number of crimes are commited by the immigrants across Europe. Consequently, the entrance of 'new' people has become a bone of contention to resolve for authorities.

In addition, digital media has become a source to navigate and erased identities in the current world. Once, print literature was used to stereotype and cast a desired image of a particular region or its people that is now abused 'efficiently' through global media outlets. Histories are erased, lands are exoticized and mass killings are reinterpreted as accidental catastrophies. Such are the cases of Myanmar, Palestine and Iran.

Conclusively, easing travel restrictions may produce advantages in terms of social harmony and better revenue generation. On the contrary, it also cause the spread of social evils that come along mass immigration and media mis-representation.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, exploring both the advantages (reducing xenophobia, fostering commercial networks) and disadvantages (mass immigration, cultural erasure and media misrepresentation) of global travel and mass media. The student presents a clear position throughout the essay. The ideas are extended and supported with relevant examples, such as the mention of Alibaba, Amazon, and eBay, as well as geopolitical references to Myanmar, Palestine, and Iran. While some points lean towards over-generalisation—particularly the assertion regarding immigration and crime rates—the overall development aligns well with Band 7 descriptors, as all prompt requirements are met with a well-maintained stance.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay demonstrates clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct central topic, moving smoothly from the introduction to the advantages, disadvantages, and conclusion. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well, such as transitional phrases like 'On the contrary', 'It is an undeniable fact', and 'Nevertheless'. However, some cohesive ties are slightly mechanical or awkward, such as 'The coetrie amongst people' and 'Conclusively', which prevent the flow from reaching higher band levels. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately to separate distinct strands of argument, satisfying the criteria for Band 7.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student uses a sufficient range of vocabulary with some flexibility and precision, attempting less common lexical items such as 'acculturation', 'allievate' (spelling error for alleviate), 'orientalist mindset', and 'coetrie' (intended to mean coterie or camaraderie). While there are noticeable spelling and word choice inaccuracies—such as 'convenieant', 'allievate', 'over the night', and 'catastrophies'—the vocabulary is generally adequate to convey complex ideas. The range is broad enough to satisfy Band 6, though lexical slips prevent a higher score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, with attempts at ambitious syntactic structures such as relative clauses and conditional-style framings. There are, however, several grammatical errors and awkward phrasing patterns throughout the text, including 'People have an easy access today', 'borne of no or little knowledge', 'no considerable knowledge of the foreign lands', and 'it also cause the spread'. Punctuation is generally acceptable, and while these errors are noticeable, they rarely impede overall communication, placing the response comfortably within Band 6.
