IELTS Writing Task 2 question
The ease of international travel and the spread of various kinds of mass media all over the world have made it more possible than ever for people to know how other people live in other countries.
Do the advantages of this development outweigh the disadvantages?
You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence. Write at least 250 words.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
nowadays, due to the presence of electronic media, international travel is much easier as people already know how people live in other countries.
however, there are both pros and cons to this. in this essay I will discuss some of the reasons why people already knows about the way of living in other countries and what are the disadvantages of this.
lets begin by looking at the advantage of this, due to the presence of technology, world has become like the global village, people from different parts of the worlds are so connected with each other. they know the customs and traditions of other countries. one of the main positives is this it bring harmony and acceptance in on another, how to coexist while having differences and they also have sense of belonging for example. people from Asia and Africa knows each other customs due to the presence of mass media.
turning to the other side of the argument, due the accessibility of media it created the sense of inferiority in others who have better lifestyle. to me more precise, people start to compare their life. for example, people who live in Rural side of Africa compare with their way of living to people living in Europe.
in conclusion, you need to weigh up the pros of getting exposure to different cultures, living with harmony with other and cons of comparing your life with other. personally i believe the benefits outweighs the negatives

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response attempts to address all parts of the task by discussing both the advantages and disadvantages of international travel and mass media, culminating in a clear personal position. However, the ideas are somewhat limited and under-developed, aligning with Band 5 descriptors. For instance, the advantage is briefly illustrated by stating that 'people from Asia and Africa knows each other customs', and the disadvantage is touched upon by noting that people in the 'Rural side of Africa' compare their lifestyles to Europeans. These examples lack depth and full elaboration. Additionally, the Length Check confirms the text is 7 words short of the 250-word minimum, which restricts the depth of development and requires a minor penalty under task achievement.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The response demonstrates some overall organization with a recognizable introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion, but the progression is hindered by poor formatting and punctuation. The student fails to capitalize the beginning of sentences (e.g., 'nowadays', 'however', 'lets', 'in conclusion'), which disrupts the flow and readability. Furthermore, cohesive devices are often mechanical, repetitive, or inaccurate, such as starting multiple sentences with 'due to the presence of' or 'due the accessibility of'. Paragraphing is attempted, but the internal cohesion within paragraphs often relies on run-on sentences rather than precise linking. This places the response firmly within Band 5.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The student uses a limited but minimally adequate range of vocabulary for the task, including phrases like 'global village', 'customs and traditions', and 'sense of belonging'. However, there are noticeable word choice and collocation errors, such as 'living with harmony with other' instead of 'living in harmony with others'. Word forms are also inaccurate in places, such as 'people already knows' instead of 'people already know'. These errors, alongside frequent capitalization mistakes, cause some distraction for the reader, matching the Band 5 descriptors for lexical resource.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'due to the presence of electronic media, international travel is much easier as people already know...'. However, control over grammar is weak, with frequent errors including subject-verb agreement issues ('people... knows', 'benefits outweighs') and missing articles. Punctuation and capitalization are heavily flawed throughout the text, as complete sentences run together without proper capitalization or period usage. While communication is not entirely impeded, the high frequency of basic grammatical errors restricts the score to Band 5.
