Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing the ease of international travel and mass media, providing arguments for both advantages and disadvantages, and stating a clear position that the advantages outweigh the drawbacks. The ideas are generally relevant, but some points are somewhat under-developed and lack specific depth. For instance, the mention of environmental pollution and western culture is introduced briefly without substantial expansion. While the writer maintains a clear viewpoint throughout, the development of ideas leans towards broad generalisations rather than fully articulated examples. Nevertheless, the task is properly addressed and all prompt requirements are met satisfactorily, placing this performance solidly at Band 6.0.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction, body paragraphs addressing different aspects of the prompt, and a concluding summary. Paragraphing is utilised adequately to separate distinct themes such as mass media and international travel. However, cohesion at the sentence level is occasionally faulty or mechanical. For example, transitional phrases and referencing are sometimes awkward, as seen in sentences like 'It have made this whole world a global village' and 'As like the enviroment can get polluted'. Furthermore, cohesive devices are sometimes repetitive or inaccurately applied, preventing the flow from reaching a higher band level. Organisation is logical overall, but mechanical linking limits it to a Band 6.0.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to communicate their thoughts on mass media and travel. The student attempts to use less common items and thematic vocabulary such as 'global village', 'development sectors', and 'influencer', though these attempts are accompanied by inaccuracies in word choice and collocation (e.g., 'convenetial' instead of 'convenient', 'It allocate people'). Spelling errors like 'enviroment' and 'postivie' also occur. While the range is sufficient to make the message clear, the noticeable frequency of lexical inaccuracies and awkward phrasing prevents the response from achieving a Band 7.0, fitting comfortably within the Band 6.0 descriptors.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some variety in grammatical structures. However, there is a persistent presence of grammatical errors, particularly regarding subject-verb agreement and preposition usage. Examples include 'access to the international travel and the trend... have caused', 'it have made to know', 'It allocate people', and 'as like the enviroment can get polluted'. Punctuation is also occasionally neglected, such as missing commas in introductory clauses. Although these errors do not severely impede overall communication, their frequency means that error-free sentences are not in the majority, which precludes a higher band score and aligns best with the Band 5.5 descriptors.
