Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses the prompt by discussing both the advantages and disadvantages of international travel and mass media. The writer presents a clear position in the conclusion that the advantages outweigh the disadvantages. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited and repetitive. For instance, the discussion on travel costs and air transport is reiterated across multiple paragraphs without expanding into deeper socio-economic impacts. While all parts of the task are addressed, the arguments lack robust extension and rely on somewhat generalised statements. This performance aligns best with Band 6.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is attempted, though the division between paragraphs can feel slightly disjointed, such as the sudden shift in the third paragraph. Cohesive devices are used to connect ideas, but some choices are mechanical or repetitive, such as the frequent use of 'and also' or 'furthermore'. Referencing is generally clear, but transitions between sentences occasionally lack fluidity. Overall organisation is present, placing this text securely at Band 6.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common items such as 'convenient', 'problematic', and 'efficiently'. However, there are noticeable lexical and word-form errors throughout the text, such as 'international exposer' instead of 'exposure', 'this advancements' instead of 'these advancements', and 'cultural' instead of 'culture'. Spelling and word-choice errors occur frequently but do not impede overall communication. These characteristics are representative of Band 5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, though control over grammar is inconsistent. There are several noticeable grammatical errors, including subject-verb agreement issues ('technology has make', 'sectors has been benefited', 'people who uses') and preposition misuse. Punctuation is also weak in places, with run-on sentences like 'Also there are some countries which uses trains or car for an instances...' The frequency of errors causes occasional difficulty for the reader, placing the grammar at a Band 5 level.
