Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The student addresses the prompt by discussing both the advantages and disadvantages of international travel and mass media in helping people understand other cultures. A position is stated in the introduction, asserting that the development has both strengths and weaknesses. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited and repetitive. For instance, the discussion on mass media and travel is convoluted, shifting back and forth between travelling in person and using mobile phones without deep elaboration. While all parts of the task are addressed, the arguments remain somewhat superficial and lack well-supported examples, which places this performance at Band 5.5.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The essay displays some overall organization with paragraph breaks and basic cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Furthermore', and 'In conclusion'. However, the logical progression is frequently disrupted by unclear referencing and awkward transitions. For example, sentences like 'likewise, instead of citizens get information through mass media it;s better to travel and feel about in real is better options' create confusion. Paragraphing is attempted, but internal cohesion within paragraphs is often faulty and mechanical. Referencing pronouns such as 'they' and 'this' are sometimes ambiguous. Therefore, the coherence and cohesion of the response aligns with a Band 5.0.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and repetitive, featuring frequent word-formation and word-choice errors, such as 'varios', 'prospective' instead of 'perspective', 'citizes', 'restuarants', and 'speard'. The student attempts less common vocabulary (e.g., 'international travel', 'mass media'), but inaccuracy is noticeable throughout the text, such as 'each and every part are real byt in somehow condition not each and everythings and real and truth'. These errors sometimes cause minor strain for the reader, though the overall meaning can generally be deciphered, placing this criterion at Band 5.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but attempts at complex structures are frequently faulty. There are persistent grammatical errors, including subject-verb agreement issues ('mass medias help', 'citizes can interact'), tense inconsistencies ('has recently became the trends'), and punctuation errors. For example, 'instead of citizens get information' and 'it depend on the how they take the situations' demonstrate a lack of firm control over basic and intermediate grammar. Because errors are frequent and occasionally impede readability, a Band 5.0 is appropriate.
