Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The student addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both the advantages and disadvantages of international travel and mass media. A clear position is established in the introduction and maintained throughout the essay. Main ideas, such as cultural awareness and potential cultural erosion, are presented and extended with supporting examples, such as young people adopting foreign lifestyles. While the ideas are somewhat generalized, they fully satisfy the requirements of Band 6.5 to 7.0. The overall argument is coherent and directly answers whether the advantages outweigh the disadvantages.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The essay is logically organized into an introduction, body paragraphs addressing both sides of the argument, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas, such as benefits in the second paragraph and drawbacks in the third. Cohesive devices like 'Firstly', 'However', and 'In contrast' are employed to guide the reader through the text, although some transitions feel a bit mechanical. Referencing is generally clear, contributing to an overall coherent structure that meets the standards of a Band 6.5.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, successfully using terms like 'cultural awareness', 'lifestyle', 'media literacy', and 'luxurious experiences'. However, there are notable spelling and lexical errors throughout the text, such as 'widespread' instead of 'widespread use', 'fof peopl eto', 'programes', 'abanon', 'Despiste', and repeated misspellings of 'believe' as 'beleive'. Despite these slips, communication is not impeded, placing the lexical performance solidly at Band 6.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, incorporating conditional and dependent clauses successfully in sentences like 'Although this development has some disadvantages, I believe that its advantages are more greater.' However, there are persistent grammatical errors, most notably the comparative form 'more greater' (double comparative), minor article omissions, and prepositions issues. Punctuation is generally acceptable, but sentence construction errors prevent the essay from reaching a higher band. The grammar reflects a Band 6.0 level.
