Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response addresses the prompt minimally, taking a clear stance that the advantages outweigh the disadvantages. However, the ideas are limited and under-developed throughout the essay. The student states that they completely agree with the advantages side and mentions points like learning about new cultures, fast food, and cars, but these points lack extension and strong supporting evidence. For instance, the discussion on how international travel helps people learn about new items remains repetitive and superficial without clear elaboration. To move to a higher band, the writer needs to fully develop their main ideas with relevant explanations and well-supported examples rather than relying on brief and generalized assertions.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
There is some basic organization with an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion, but there is no clear overall progression of ideas. Cohesive devices are frequently inaccurate, inadequate, or repetitive, as seen with phrases like 'First of all,' 'In the second hand,' and 'In conclusion.' Paragraphing is attempted, but the internal logical flow within paragraphs is weak. For example, the second body paragraph abruptly shifts topics and lacks clear referencing, making it difficult for the reader to follow the argument smoothly. To achieve a higher band, the writer must ensure that ideas are logically sequenced with appropriate and varied cohesive devices, and that each paragraph maintains a clear, unified focus.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The vocabulary is limited and minimally adequate for the task, with noticeable errors that frequently cause difficulty for the reader. The student relies on basic, repetitive words such as 'things', 'people', and 'country'. There are numerous lexical errors involving word choice, collocation, and word form, such as writing 'individulas'' instead of 'individuals', 'kwon how live people' instead of 'know how people live', and 'told new langauges' instead of 'learned new languages'. Spelling errors like 'thier' and 'efeect' also occur. To progress to a higher band, the writer needs to expand their vocabulary range, use less common lexical items accurately, and pay closer attention to word formation and spelling.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response displays a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying heavily on simple sentences and faulty attempts at complex ones. Frequent grammatical errors are present throughout the text, including issues with verb forms, tense consistency, subject-verb agreement, and prepositions. Examples include 'I am completely agree from advantages side', 'mass media whole the world have made', and 'when over country student to go to abroad'. These frequent errors frequently distort meaning and cause difficulty for the reader. To move up to the next band, the writer must demonstrate better control over basic sentence patterns, improve agreement and verb forms, and reduce the density of grammatical mistakes.
