Student answer (Band 6.0)

Over time, the ease of international travel and the spread of various kinds of mass media all over the world have made it more possible than ever to know how other people live in other countries. This has resulted in an ongoing debate on whether the advantages of this development outweigh the disadvantages. And here's the truth: the advantages absolutely do outweigh the disadvantages, as knowledge about other countries can increase social awareness, while also aiding in solving international problems.

Firstly, increased knowledge about how other people live in various countries can greatly contribute to increased social awareness. Social awareness is a very important characteristic in our day-to-day lives, as it helps us think and learn beyond the "social norm" in our countries. Additionally, it helps us spread awareness of the struggles some countries are going through. For example, if it weren't for international travel and the spread of various kinds of mass media, we would never really understand the struggles some children in Africa are going through, such as dehydration and starvation. Through mass media, we can understand, spread awareness, and even try to help through donations.

Furthermore, knowledge about other countries and how people live there can surprisingly provide great job opportunities. For example, the United Nations is a worldwide organisation whose main purpose is to bring countries together and solve international problems. Without the ease of international travel and the spread of various kinds of mass media, many factors that shape the United Nations would not be possible. For instance, the meetings that happen consistently would be quite difficult to arrange without the ease of international travel. Additionally, without various kinds of mass media, it would be hard to gain information about the various international problems that need to be discussed and solved. Therefore, without the ease of knowing how other people live in other countries, large organisations such as the United Nations would find it extremely difficult to do what they do best.

In conclusion, the ease of international travel and the spread of various kinds of mass media all over the world have made it more possible than ever to spread knowledge about how people in other countries live. This is a crucial thing in our present day, and the advantages definitely outweigh the disadvantages, as knowledge about other countries not only helps spread social awareness but also contributes greatly to solving international problems.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task and presents a clear position throughout, stating that the advantages outweigh the disadvantages. The ideas are relevant, focusing on social awareness and international problem-solving through organisations like the United Nations. However, some ideas are under-developed rather than fully extended. For instance, the discussion on social awareness relies on a single general example regarding children in Africa, and the connection between mass media and job opportunities quickly pivots into a discussion of international organisations. Additionally, 92 words from the task prompt were not counted as original student output, leaving a sufficiently addressed core argument that meets the requirements for this level while stopping short of fully sustained elaboration across all supporting points.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction and conclusion, and the use of transitional markers like 'Firstly', 'Furthermore', and 'In conclusion' establishes a basic logical sequence. However, cohesion is at times mechanical or slightly repetitive, as seen in the frequent reuse of phrases such as 'the ease of international travel and the spread of various kinds of mass media'. Referencing and paragraphing are generally handled adequately, but the progression of ideas within the body paragraphs occasionally lacks smoothness, keeping the cohesive framework within the boundaries of this level.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

An adequate range of vocabulary is deployed for the task, allowing the writer to communicate their ideas effectively. There are successful attempts to use less common items and phrases such as 'social norm', 'dehydration and starvation', and 'worldwide organisation'. However, some word choices and phrasing feel repetitive or slightly unnatural, such as 'increased knowledge about how other people live in various countries can greatly contribute to increased social awareness'. Spelling and word-choice errors are rare and do not impede communication, reflecting the expected performance for this lexical band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating relative clauses and conditional structures such as 'if it weren't for international travel and the spread of various kinds of mass media, we would never really understand...'. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, including wordiness and slight awkwardness in complex syntactic patterns, but these errors rarely impede communication and the meaning remains clear throughout the response. The control over verb tenses and basic structures is generally sound, representing a typical blend of error-free and flawed sentences.
