Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
The response responds to the task only minimally, failing to adequately address both sides of the prompt regarding the advantages and disadvantages of international travel and mass media. Furthermore, the length requirement is not met, as the response contains only 199 words, falling well short of the 250-word minimum. The position is not fully clear, and the ideas presented are limited and under-developed. For instance, the mention of how 'people do sometimes hurt other peoples cultural sentiments' is superficial and lacks the necessary explanation or supporting examples required to properly explore the prompt. To reach a higher level, the writer must ensure the essay meets the minimum word count and develops fully extended arguments for both advantages and disadvantages with clear, relevant evidence.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
There is some organisation present, such as the attempt to introduce and conclude the essay, but there is no clear overall progression throughout the text. Paragraphing is weak and fails to structure the arguments logically, as seen in the second and third paragraphs which bundle multiple contrasting ideas together. Cohesive devices are inadequate, inaccurate, or repetitive, relying heavily on basic transitional phrases like 'however' and 'to illustrate further', which are sometimes misused or lack proper punctuation. Referencing is also unclear at times, such as the pronoun use in 'due which everyone is finding it easy'. To improve, the writer needs to logically sequence ideas, use paragraphing more effectively to separate distinct arguments, and employ a wider, more accurate range of cohesive devices to guide the reader smoothly through the text.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited but minimally adequate to convey basic meaning. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'itinerary' and 'cultural sentiments', but these are accompanied by noticeable errors in word choice, collocation, and spelling, such as 'travelling is something which holds different meaning' instead of 'meanings', and awkward phrasing like 'small group population'. There are also persistent issues with word formation and spelling, such as lower-case beginnings for sentences and missing words. These errors can cause some difficulty for the reader. To achieve a higher band, the writer should expand their lexical repertoire, incorporate more precise academic vocabulary, and pay closer attention to natural collocations and correct spelling.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response demonstrates a very limited range of structures, relying mostly on repetitive, simple sentence patterns or overly long, run-on sentences connected by conjunctions. Attempts at complex sentences are frequently faulty, leading to frequent errors that can cause difficulty for the reader. There are persistent issues with basic grammar, including poor punctuation (such as starting sentences with lower-case letters), missing articles (e.g., 'to the very small group population'), incorrect verb forms, and preposition errors inside grammatical patterns. For example, 'due to mass media. media in general also provided...' contains severe punctuation and sentence boundary errors. To improve, the writer needs to demonstrate a greater variety of complex sentence forms and maintain strict control over basic grammatical rules and punctuation.
