Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses the prompt by discussing the advantages and disadvantages of international travel and mass media, and a clear position is presented in the introduction and conclusion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited and under-developed, which keeps the response at this level. While some points are raised regarding cultural understanding and the sharing of daily routines, the supporting explanations are repetitive and lack depth. For instance, the discussion on how mass media helps people learn about other cultures is generalized without providing robust supporting evidence. Furthermore, the counter-argument regarding privacy is rather brief and somewhat confused by the mention of 'travelling too much', showing that some parts of the task are addressed more fully than others.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a discernible progression of ideas from introduction to body paragraphs and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used to separate distinct points, such as the benefits of media and the privacy concerns. However, cohesion is sometimes faulty or mechanical. The use of transitional markers like 'Consequently', 'Another significant benefit is that', and 'Despite having benefits' is present, but referencing is occasionally unclear, such as the ambiguous pronoun use in sentences like 'which can make more open-minded and give respect others people who belong different culture.' Additionally, some sentences lack smooth transitions, making the flow feel slightly disjointed in places.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common words and phrases such as 'open-minded', 'accommodation', and 'substaincial'. However, there are noticeable errors in word choice, word form, and spelling throughout the text, including 'travelling' instead of 'travel', 'varies' instead of 'various', 'medias' instead of 'media', 'throgh' instead of 'through', and 'substaincial' instead of 'substantial'. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they cause some difficulty for the reader and reveal a limited control over less common lexical items and collocations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writing relies on a limited range of structures, featuring a mix of simple and complex sentence forms. However, attempts at complex sentences are frequently faulty, leading to grammar and punctuation errors that cause difficulty for the reader. There are persistent issues with subject-verb agreement, articles, and prepositions within grammatical patterns, such as in the opening sentence: 'various kind of social platform which is spread worldwide, so people easily know about how individuals live in their countries.' Other errors include missing subjects or objects (e.g., 'which can make more open-minded'), awkward phrasing, and run-on structures joined improperly by conjunctions, demonstrating a frequent occurrence of basic grammatical inaccuracies.
