Student answer (Band 5.0)

In today's world, some people believe that the ease of international travel and the spread of various kinds of mass media all over the world have made it more possible than ever for individuals to know how other people live in other countries. Although, this trend offers several drawbacks, it believe that the advantages of this development outweigh the disadvantages.

One of the main advantages of this view is that it helps people to know the culture of a particular nation. Some people are eager and have a hobby to learn culture of different countries. Thus, mass media plays an important role in helping them. Additionally, this method helps people to explore a kind of lifestyle of different nations. This helps individuals to improve their own lifestyle by watching people of different countries. Therefore, this helps people to imporve their lifestyle and become modern.

Despite these advantages, there are certain drawbacks to consider. Firstly, this belief can disrupt the privacy of the culture of a nation. This is because some cultures and festivals of a country are kept private and not allowed to reveal through mass media. As a result, this can disrupt the privacy of a nation. Secondly, this view can disrespect or insult the culture or residents of a nation, regardless of their intention. Some countries have their own regional language. If people travel to these nations, they may interpret in wrong way which can disrespect them and can even lead to conflict.

In conclusion, while this method offers several drawbacks such as disrupt the privacy and can disrespect the residents of a nation, its advantages in terms of encouraging people to know the culture and lifestyle of a country, are more significant. Therefore, I strongly believe that the advantages of this view clearly outweigh the disadvantages.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

Your position is clear: you believe the benefits outweigh the drawbacks, and the response discusses both sides of the question. The points about learning other cultures and lifestyles are relevant, as are concerns about privacy and unintended offence. However, the ideas are only partly developed. For example, you say people can improve their lifestyle by watching others, but do not explain how or give a specific example. The privacy point is also asserted rather than supported, and the language-related example needs a clearer link to international travel and cultural understanding. To strengthen the response, explain each main point with a concrete example and make the comparison between the benefits and harms more explicit. The 43 words copied from the task prompt were not counted.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, separate paragraphs for advantages and disadvantages, and a conclusion that restates your position. Sequencing words such as “Additionally,” “Firstly,” and “In conclusion” help signal the stages of the argument. However, progression within paragraphs is limited, and some links are repetitive or unclear. For instance, the advantage paragraph repeats that the development helps people learn about culture and lifestyle without showing how the second point adds to the first. “This view” and “this method” are also vague references, making it less clear whether you mean travel, mass media, or both. Develop a clearer sequence of claim, explanation, and example, and use more precise references to improve cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “culture,” “lifestyle,” “privacy,” and “regional language,” and the reader can generally understand your main points. However, the range is limited and several phrases are repetitive or imprecise, such as “this view,” “this method,” and repeated references to “disrupt the privacy.” Some word combinations are unnatural, including “have a hobby to learn culture” and “interpret in wrong way.” There is also a spelling error in “imporve.” These choices sometimes make the argument less clear or natural. Aim for more precise topic vocabulary and check collocations and spelling; for example, describe how media can “expose cultural practices” or how visitors may “misinterpret local customs.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt a mixture of simple and complex sentences, including a concession in the introduction and cause-and-effect structures such as “This is because…” and “As a result…”. However, errors occur frequently, particularly in sentence construction, articles, and verb forms. Examples include “Although, this trend offers several drawbacks, it believe…” and “Some people are eager and have a hobby to learn culture,” where the clauses are not formed accurately. In “If people travel to these nations, they may interpret in wrong way,” the sentence also lacks a clear grammatical object and has an article omission. These errors can make the reader pause, even though the overall meaning is usually recoverable. Practise accurate complex sentences and check each sentence for a complete subject and verb.
