Student answer (Band 6.5)

People are becoming more aware of the different lifestyles of different countries largely because of the ease of international travel and the spread of various kinds of mass media all over the world. Today, world has become a small place thanks to the advancements in technology. Although it can influence people more towards other cultures and can make them forget about their own roots, its advantages which include bringing cultures together and also awareness about new technological advancements outweigh the disadvantages.

As people become more aware of how people live in other countries, they get to know about their traditions as well as problems that they face. For example, a lot of citizens of The United States of America take part in navratri as well as holi, which are Hindu festivals. It brings different countries as well as people together. A lot of people discover about the rich architecture of UK, strong diversity of India and technological advancements of the USA and China when they visit these places or via social media platforms. It creates a sense of cultural and social unity. Additionally, being more aware of the outer world helps a country to identify possible areas where it is lagging behind in compared to other countries and what possible solutions it can apply to them.

Some people tend to forget about their roots and instead follow foreign traditions and rules that are at times alien to them. For example, a lot of Indian people tend to follow western culture and styles and because of this, many feel that India is losing its identity because there has been a lot of westernization like celebration of Christmas, valentine's day, etc already incorporated within its culture. However, India is seeing strong growth in the field of technology as well as infrastructure for which a lot of references might have been from the west.

Although there is a risk of losing identity which is a strong disadvantage, people can still look to be completely attached to their roots while also incorporating useful and beneficial methods or technology of lifestyles of other countries.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

Your position is clear throughout: you argue that cultural exchange and learning outweigh the risk of losing cultural identity. You address both sides and support them with relevant examples, including participation in Indian festivals in the United States and the influence of Western customs in India. The point about countries identifying areas where they lag behind also extends the benefits beyond cultural exchange. This is a well-focused response, though some claims are broad—for example, that these developments create “cultural and social unity”—and the examples are not always explained in enough detail to show how widespread or significant the effects are. Develop the reasoning behind each example more fully and make the comparison of advantages and disadvantages more explicit.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay has a clear overall structure: an introduction states your view, the next paragraphs consider benefits and drawbacks, and the conclusion returns to your position. Ideas generally progress logically, and signposts such as “Additionally,” “However,” and “Although” help readers follow the argument. To make the progression more consistently smooth, improve links between some examples and the claims they are meant to support. For instance, the list of architecture, diversity, and technology is followed by a claim about unity, but the connection could be made clearer. Some linking is also repetitive, particularly the repeated use of “a lot of” and “people.” Use more precise referencing and vary transitions so cohesion feels less formulaic.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “traditions,” “cultural and social unity,” “identity,” “westernization,” and “technological advancements.” These choices allow you to discuss both cultural influence and development clearly. There are also attempts at more specific phrasing, but some expressions are imprecise or unnatural, such as “discover about the rich architecture” and “lagging behind in compared to other countries.” Repetition of “a lot of” and “people” limits flexibility, while “strong diversity” is not a natural collocation in this context. Aim for more precise collocations and a wider range of terms for cultural exchange and social change. These improvements would make the argument sound more fluent and controlled.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex structures, including a concession in “Although it can influence people…” and a relative clause in “problems that they face.” Most sentences remain understandable, and errors do not prevent the reader from following your argument. Some grammatical inaccuracies persist, however. For example, “Today, world has become a small place” needs an article, and “what possible solutions it can apply to them” has an unclear pronoun reference and awkward clause structure. In “many feel that India is losing its identity because there has been a lot of westernization … incorporated,” the construction is difficult to control. Review articles, prepositions within sentence patterns, and long clauses; breaking some sentences into clearer units would improve accuracy.
