Student answer (Band 6.0)

With the modernization of the world there are advances in all fields of life including travel and social media. This modernization leads to better understanding and knowledge of cultures of other countries. These developments in the modern life have many advantages and disadavantages. I think that advantages of this development outweigh the disadvantages as it promotes harmony and co-opertaion among different nations worldwide.

On the one hand, the modern world has become a global village with the technological advancements in the field of telecommunication and travel industry. People can travel to any part of the world and can come across various destinations. For example, tourists travelling to developed countries from developing societies gain valuable experinece about life in modern cities. Moreover, they gain knowledge of new techniques which they can apply in their own areas after coming back. Furthermore, people receive valuable information about new remedies and techniques shared by individuals of other cultures, by watching videos on social media. This sharing of knowledge and information promotes innovation.

On the hand, there are some disadvantages of this approach. The travellers form an endemic areas of disease can be problematic for other contries. This might result in spread of an airborne disease like flue or Corona. Likewise, widespread use of social media might be a source of spreading rumors. In addition, many social media platforms are not reliable for their information and might provide false information.

In conclusion, despite some drawbacks of international travel and mass media, advantages are far more than disadvantages. The government should pass legislation to avoid misuse of internet for negative purposes and should introduce strict measures for safe journey to avoid spreading diseases.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear from the introduction: you believe the benefits outweigh the drawbacks, and the conclusion maintains this view. You address both sides with relevant points, including learning from other societies, sharing useful knowledge, disease transmission and misinformation. The examples about tourists gaining experience and social media sharing remedies help make the discussion concrete. This meets the task well, but some ideas are less fully developed than others: for instance, the claim that cultural understanding promotes harmony is stated rather than explained, and the risks of false information are not illustrated. To strengthen the response, explain how each example supports your comparison of the overall benefits and costs, rather than mainly listing points.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, two contrasting body paragraphs and a conclusion. Signposting such as “On the one hand,” “Moreover,” “Likewise” and “In conclusion” helps readers follow the main stages of the argument. The ideas within paragraphs are generally relevant and ordered sensibly. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical, with several points linked by repeated additive transitions rather than showing how one idea leads to the next. “On the hand” also makes the contrast less clear, and the relationship between the examples and the claim that knowledge-sharing promotes innovation could be made more explicit. Use a wider range of referencing and linking, and build clearer connections between claims, explanations and examples.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a range of topic-related vocabulary, including “technological advancements,” “global village,” “innovation” and “misuse of internet,” which allows you to discuss travel and media. There are also attempts at less common expressions, such as “valuable experience” and “airborne disease.” However, noticeable spelling and word-choice errors reduce precision, including “disadavantages,” “co-opertaion,” “experinece,” “contries” and “flue.” Some phrases are also awkward or imprecise, such as “form an endemic areas of disease” and “modern life.” These do not prevent the main message from being understood, but they limit the accuracy and flexibility of the vocabulary. Proofread spelling and choose more natural collocations, especially when describing health risks and information sources.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use both straightforward sentences and more complex forms, including the relative clause in “techniques which they can apply” and the conditional structure “This might result in spread…”. Most sentences communicate their meaning, and the response is not limited to one sentence pattern. Some grammatical errors remain, however. For example, “These developments in the modern life” has an unnecessary article, while “The travellers form an endemic areas” has problems with the preposition and agreement. There are also missing spaces after punctuation and inconsistent comma use, as in “For example, tourists” and “social media.This.” Aim to check articles, singular/plural agreement and punctuation, while continuing to use complex sentences accurately.
