IELTS Writing Task 2 question

The ease of international travel and the spread of various kinds of mass media all over the world have made it more possible than ever for people to know how other people live in other countries.

Do the advantages of this development outweigh the disadvantages?

You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence. Write at least 250 words.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Easy worldwide travel and various means of the social media have made it easier for the world to get to know about foreigners. Although this could have some privacy issues, I believe the advantages outweigh the disadvantages because it is more convenient to know about other cultures.

The main disadvantage for having a swift information about other people is the insecurity in their private lives. Some people might have some privacy issues if they are approachable. As a result, this could lead to negative behaviour if their personal lives are disturbed. For example, some tribes on islands are exposed due to the fast pace social media and travel to their habitat. They believe others as intruders and some time they attack them or remain introvert in front of them.

On the other hand, there are more benefits than the drawbacks. An easy access to others' lives can help find information about others. People can collect data on them for different purposes, such as knowing about their cultural background or study their lifestyles. These data can help locals to know others, and find similarities and differences about other ethnicities.

For instance, Individuals can know about Asian people, their traditions, or other fun facts about them by visiting or watching online videos about them.I think this benefit has more positive impacts than any other setbacks.

In conclusion, although travelling around the world and support from different social media platforms to know about others may have privacy issues, I believe that the advantages outweigh the disadvantages because these conducts have made it effortless for citizens to know about international cultural heritage.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear in the introduction and conclusion: you believe the benefits of learning about other cultures outweigh privacy concerns. You address both sides and give relevant examples, including isolated island communities and learning about Asian traditions through travel or videos. This meets the task, but the advantages are explained more fully than the disadvantages, and some points remain general. For example, “collect data on them for different purposes” does not clearly explain how this benefits people or society, while the privacy example could show more specifically what harm occurs. Develop each main idea with a clearer explanation of its consequences and a more precise example, so the comparison between advantages and disadvantages is more convincing.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the disadvantage and advantages, and a conclusion that restates your view. Linking phrases such as “On the other hand,” “For example,” and “In conclusion” help readers follow the argument, and the progression is generally logical. To make the organisation more effective, ensure that each paragraph develops one central point in a clear sequence. The advantage paragraph moves from collecting information to cultural similarities and then to Asian traditions, but the links between these ideas are not always explicit. Some references, such as “these conducts,” are also unclear. More precise referencing and smoother connections between claims and examples would strengthen the flow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use vocabulary relevant to the topic, including “privacy issues,” “cultural background,” “lifestyles,” and “cultural heritage,” and the meaning is generally understandable. There are also attempts at less common expressions, but several word choices and collocations are unnatural or imprecise, which limits clarity. For instance, “various means of the social media,” “a swift information,” and “remain introvert” do not express the intended ideas naturally. “Approachable” is also not a clear fit for describing people whose private lives are exposed. Aim for accurate, natural combinations of words rather than more elaborate phrasing; this will make your argument sound more fluent and precise.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a concession in “Although this could have some privacy issues” and a conditional structure with “if their personal lives are disturbed.” Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “Some people might have some privacy issues if they are approachable” has an unclear grammatical relationship between the condition and the result, while “by visiting or watching online videos about them” does not clearly attach to the subject of the sentence. There are also issues with articles, plurals, and punctuation, such as the comma after “For instance” and the run-together sentence ending “them.I think.” Review sentence boundaries and check that clauses clearly identify who is doing each action.
