Student answer (Band 6.0)

Nowadays, international travel and mass media have made it easier for people to know about the people living in other parts of the world. Although this development has several benefits and drawbacks, I believe that advantages of this development outweigh the disadvantages because it increase cultural understanding and provides useful information.

On the one hand, one of the major advantage of mass media is that it gives information about how people in other countries spend their lives, because of social media applications such as whatsapp, facebook and instagram we are able to understand their other's languages their likes and dislikes. Another benfits of traveling to different countries is that it help us in building great exposure. For example, if we look in our past when social media is not common. The people who are not able to travel in other countries living very simple lives. They are not able to get good jobs and end up their life in same poverty. Nowadays, everything has been changed significantly, now even a lower middle class individual have a mobile phone which he can use to learn from different people around the world.

On the other hand, there are some drawbacks of this trend. Firstly, everything on social media is not always true people these days only shows best part of their lives on these applications. The normal who are not able to afford those things end up increase their expectations from their lives. For example, recently their is a news circulating in social media about a child who attempt suicide because his parents are not able to bought a apple phone for him.

In conclusion, international travel and mass social media have both benefit and drawbacks. However, i believe that the advantages outweigh the disadvantages because they help people understand different cultures and discover new opportunities. These benefits are more important than the possible negative effects, provided that people use media wisely and respect their own traditions.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear from the introduction: you believe the benefits outweigh the drawbacks, and the conclusion restates this view. You address both sides, with relevant points about learning about other cultures and the unrealistic expectations created by social media. The example of a child wanting an expensive phone helps illustrate the latter concern. However, some ideas are less fully developed than others: the claim that people unable to travel “end up their life in same poverty” is broad and not clearly explained, and the discussion of travel itself receives less support than the discussion of social media. To strengthen the response, explain more precisely how exposure leads to cultural understanding or employment opportunities, and connect each example directly to your overall comparison of benefits and harms.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for advantages and disadvantages, and a conclusion. The signposts “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “In conclusion” make the direction of the argument easy to follow. This gives the essay a coherent arrangement, though some links within paragraphs are less controlled. For example, the shift from social-media exposure to travel and then to poverty is abrupt, and “For example” introduces a past-versus-present comparison that is not fully tied to the preceding point. Some sentences also run together, making relationships between ideas harder to track. Use clearer sentence boundaries and refer back explicitly to the point being developed; this would make progression smoother and cohesion less dependent on formulaic transitions.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including “cultural understanding,” “mass media,” “expectations,” and “opportunities.” There are also attempts at more specific phrasing, such as “building great exposure,” but this collocation is unnatural and reduces precision. Noticeable word-choice, word-form, and spelling problems include “major advantage,” “Another benfits,” “the normal,” and “a apple phone.” Some phrases, such as “people living in other parts of the world,” are repeated rather than varied. These issues do not prevent the reader from understanding the argument, but they make expression less natural and occasionally unclear. Build accuracy by learning common collocations and checking spelling and word forms, while replacing repeated general terms with precise alternatives.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a concession in the opening (“Although this development has several benefits and drawbacks”) and a conditional phrase in the conclusion (“provided that people use media wisely”). Meaning is generally recoverable, but errors occur across verb forms, agreement, articles, and sentence boundaries. For instance, “it increase” should be “it increases,” “it help us” should be “it helps us,” and “a lower middle class individual have” needs subject–verb agreement. The sentence beginning “because of social media applications” also lacks clear punctuation and contains a run-on sequence. These are some recurring errors, so proofread for agreement and verb forms, and divide long sentences into complete, clearly punctuated clauses. More consistently accurate complex sentences would improve control.
